Great Video: F-Class Team Shooting with a Wind Coach
Editor’s Comment: All long-range competitive shooters should watch this excellent video — whether you shoot with a team or as an individual. Three cameras were used so you can watch the shooter, the range flags, and the target simultaneously. After a discussion of scoring, the actual shooting starts at the five-minute mark in the video. Under the guidance of wind coach Gary Rasmussen, U.S. F-Class Open Team Captain Shiraz Balolia shoots 100-7X for ten shots, following Gary’s wind calls.
Team Shooting with a Coach
Shiraz tells us: “We come across a lot of shooters who have never shot under a coach. This video was produced to give shooters a basic understanding of shooting with a coach and the importance of releasing a good shot. In a team setting, you basically leave all the decision-making to the coach and aim where you’re told to aim. I’ve worked with Gary many times and it shows in the comfort level we have with each other. The coach plots the shots or a plotter advises the coach of any grouping that is not centered.”

Shiraz was shooting a 7mm F-Open rig: “My .284 Shehane rifle takes about 10 to 12 shots to settle down and that is probably why we made several scope adjustments while shooting. It is a great caliber and a step up from a straight .284 Winchester. The wind was relatively calm, but sometimes that slow wind with subtle angle changes can be very deceiving.”
The video was shot the first week of May 2013 at a range in Custer, WA located about 20 miles from Bellingham, Washington. The production team included Shiraz Balolia, Gary Rasmussen, three cameramen, and a target puller. Big Thanks to Grizzly Industrial for providing the camera crew and post-production talent.Similar Posts:

Great Job and Great Visual Aid!! Thank you to Grizzly/Shiraz & Gary for taking the time to put this together!!
Rod
Good shooting and a great video. Very well done all around.
Just for the sake of technical completeness, I’d add that there *is* a 5 on the F-Class target as well. Not that it gets used much at 800yds, especially not by Shiraz!
Monte you are right – its where the 10 goes.
Great video! Thanks to all. I enjoyed watching it.
Well done Shiraz & Mr. Rasmussen. Thanks for taking the video & the explanations. I like it much!
.
Thank you very much Mr. Shiraz!!!
This video is a great help to shooters that is just begining to shoot F-Class. 5 minutes of this video is worth more than 1 hour reading about wind on books!
Is there any chance to make a few more of these videos (even if it will be to buy) showing the shooting on dificult wind conditions at 1.000 yards?
We, begginners, specially from countries that does not have 1.000yards ranges or much F-Class, would apreciate a lot!
LRCampos.
LR and all, thank you for your comments.
We will be making more videos and make them available as a service to shooters. However, next three months need to concentrate on the upcoming World Championships. If there are ideas about what you guys would like to see particularly, we can try to accomodate. The range here is 800 yards maximum, so all range videos will be at that distance, but the techniques will be the same for longer distances.
Shiraz has a complete shooting package and understands that waterline vertical is the name of the long range game. I must say that it warms my heart to see him shooting a .284 Shehane — the most balanced 7mm for long range.
Of course, Gary does a great job in the video in communicating his wind calls to Shiraz. But the readers need to know more about this man. Gary has been like a father and mentor to the Under 25 Palma Team members. He is nothing but dedicated to our youth and the development of our teams from the ground up. Gary is a great man and a great ambassador to our sport.
It is videos like this that get new shooters into the sport. There is such a major lack of online videos, and instruction to explain the nuances of competitive target shooting in general. I really enjoyed the professional editing and it was very enjoyable. GREAT VIDEO.
To Gary and Shiraz this video is a magnificent coaching tool !
It displays the strong communication between coach and marksman. The methodology of Left 1, Right 1, left 2, Right 2 and so on. Simple to use, teach and practice. GIVER’S IS GAIN………THANKYOU
