Buell’s Beast: Heavy Artillery for ELR and 2-Mile Match

Our friend Darrell Buell has a new Beast — a monster 64-inch-long .375 CheyTac that weighs more than 70 pounds! Designed for ultra-long-range shooting (two miles and beyond), this beast represents the state-of-the-art in extreme long-range rifles.
Darrell reports: “This rifle is pretty much purpose-built to shoot 2+ miles extremely accurately. It is a .375 CheyTac (lengthened) built on a BAT 2.5″ action. The custom 35″, 1:10″-twist Brux barrel is a fat, 2″-diameter ‘straight taper’ with fluting. A custom 5″-long muzzle brake is fitted at the end. All barreled action work was done by R.W. Snyder Custom Rifles. The stock was created to fit the build by PDC Custom, and the massive muzzle brake as well.” The “bridge” at the end may look like a barrel block, but it’s not — the barrel completely free-floats. (The Picatinny rail on top of the bridge allows use of an overhanging bipod as an alternative to the JoyPod).
Darrell has lots of elevation on tap: “With 150 MOA in the Ivey rings, another 20 MOA in the scope rail, 55 MOA in the Nightforce Competition scope, and 10 MOA in the FCR-1 reticle, there’s an impressive +235 MOA available.”
The bipod Darrell will be using for his ELR sessions and the ‘King of 2 Miles’ match is a custom counter-weighted JoyPod crafted by Seb Lambang. With the counter-weight, Darrell says his monster 70-lb gun “adjusts as smoothly as an F-T/R rig”. The glass is a Nightforce 15-55x52mm Competition scope carried in Ivey +150 MOA rings, which in turn are mounted to a +20 MOA BAT scope rail. Darrell says: “It’s been a heck of a couple months, getting this monster built in time, thanks particularly to Southern Cerakote, which turned it around in less than 24 hours.”
Buell’s Beast runs 350gr solid bullets at approximately 3250 fps. Check out the massive .375 CheyTac cartridge compared to a .308 Winchester:

Want to see how this Beast shoots? Here’s your chance. Darrell will be running a 4000-yard Extreme Long Range (ELR) Training course in North Carolina, June 12-14, 2015. The class will be taught by Darrell, Maverick Stroud, and past High Power National Champion Sherri Gallagher. The closest target will be at one mile, with max distance 4400 yards. A few spots are still available (details below). For more info visit the LBI Precision Facebook page or email darrell.lbiprecision [at] yahoo.com.

I have a question, at what range do you zero the rifle, Or… what is the closest range possible to zero the rifle with a scope that high I cant imagine a 100 yard zero. Not that the gun would be used to shoot a 100 yard, but you need a zero range to start with.
And….really cool rifle by the way!
Mike
Mike,
I plan on putting a 1000 yard zero on the rifle, just for ease of zeroing at typical KD ranges. The likelihood of this rifle ever being fired at 100 yards is vanishingly small.
That said, I’ll do the load development on it at 300 yards, as usual.
Best!
Darrell
Pretty cool setup… all it needs is wheels and a pintle hitch Sounds like fun!
Looks like the rear scope ring has some adjustment for elevation (and maybe windage). So I guess maybe not 100yds but maybe 300-600yds?
Mike,
The rings are Ivey Rings, pretty much exactly what you need for this sort of distance. They are adjustable in 1 MOA increments for a maximum adjustment of 150 MOA. (http://www.iveyshooting.com/)
Altogether, 150 MOA rings, 20 MOA scope rail, 55 MOA in the Nightforce Competition scope, and 10 MOA in the FCR-1 reticle adds up to an impressive 235 MOA available.
I’m wondering how well the Ivey rings hold zero. I know they have been on the market for quite some time, so expect they work well, but have never talked to anybody with long-term first-hand experience with them.
Darrell see if Savage will start a production run of .375 chey tach. Just kidding nice rifle all the best.
I’ve had a 375 and a 375 snipetac or improved 375 and run a 32″ lilja barrel 1-10 twist. Tried different combos. Powder , bullets ect. Accuracy was very disappointing Fps was all over. Any help here would be appreciated
4,400 yard shots? Wow 10+ second flight times, bullets dropping a foot for every forward yard gained. 1,000 foot holdovers. Scopes pointed at the middle of the barrels. This does sound impressive to watch.
David,
Initial (very small scale) testing showed extremely promising results. Average speed for the one load tested was 3201 fps, with an ES of 3 fps. Accuracy was only so-so, ~1.5″ group at 300 yards. We’ll dial that down in coming days. Feel free to message me at the Facebook site listed above (LBI Precision), and I’ll let you know what steps we took to make the ES as small as we could get it.
Best,
Darrell
Just beginning and havent fired the first round. 70+ years shooting, 45-70, 308, 12ga, 6.5. Just found this ELR dicipline. Bought a Savage 112 Lapua 338, 34 power scope, and some ammo. Need instruction and mentoring. Noticed the classes mentioned are several years ago.
