Here’s the good news — loaded ammunition is starting to appear at gun stores again, where shelves were once bare. Here’s the bad news — prices are still WAY higher than they were a couple years ago. High demand and production issues related to the Pandemic continue to create shortages so prices are high. Plus the cost of components, copper in particular is up. That means ammo costs are definitely high. And demand is also driven by new gun owners: “NSSF estimates that 8.4 million people bought a firearm for the first time in 2020. That’s 40 percent of all purchases.” (Source: NSSF.org)
Given the continuing ammo supply shortage, you need to be a smart shopper (particularly when looking for 9mm, .40 SW, .45 ACP and .22 LR ammo). That’s where this article should help. With AmmoSeek, you can quickly search for dozens of different ammo types, including .22 LR, 9mm, .40 SW, .223 Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor, and other popular cartridges. LAMENT: These prices are depressingly high. Not that long ago, you could get a 50-round box of CCI Blazer or Sellier & Bellot 9mm ammo for under $10.00/box. Now a “good deal” is over three times that price — and some places are now charging $50.00 for 50 rounds — FIVE times the price.
.223 Rem Ammo in Stock Now
And here are this morning’s results for .223 Rem ammunition. You can get significant savings by buying in bulk, that’s for sure. CLICK HERE for latest update.
.22 LR Rimfire Ammo in Stock Now
And here are recent results for .22 LR rimfire ammunition. There are often supplies of .22 LR at major vendors such as Brownells and Midsouth, but it sells out quickly so you need to check often. Brownells does have .22 LR Winchester Super-X in 100rd boxes in stock right now. The price, $13.99/100rds, is pretty good (these days), and you get $30 Off $300 and free shipping with Code FJ3.

Are you thinking of getting involved in Pistol Competition? Along with IDPA, the U.S. Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) offers fun, sanctioned matches throughout the country. The USPSA production division allows you to be competitive without spending a fortune on a custom-built handgun. Hundreds of handguns are approved for competition on the USPSA Production Gun List. But some Production Division guns are better than others — at least in the opinion of active competitors. Two guns dominated the rankings — representing 51% of all pistols shot in Production Division:
At last year’s USPSA Nationals, competitors were surveyed. From the shooter surveys, we are able to determine the most-favored USPSA Production handguns. Here we present the top five, as ranked in the January/February 2021 issue of USPSA webzine.*
The most popular USPSA Production Division pistol, by far, is the CZ-USA Shadow 2 ($1350 retail). A full 39% of all Production class competitors at Nationals used CZ’s Shadow 2. With an all-metal frame, this beefy (46.5 oz.) pistol handles recoil well. It offers excellent accuracy out of the box. The Shadow 2, offered in various colors, features an ambidextrous safety, fiber-optic front and HAJO rear sights, and 17-round magazine. Shooting Sports USA states that: “Competitive shooters will also appreciate the double-action trigger, which is smooth and light with little to no reset.”
Here is the latest “Optics Ready” version of the CZ-USA Shadow 2 Pistol:
Being used by 12% of Production Division shooters, the EAA Tangfolio Witness Elite Stock II ($1302 MSRP) is the second most popular USPSA Production pistol. Crafted with chrome-finished metal slide and frame, this is a handsome pistol. Weighing a hefty 45 ounces (2.69 lbs), this pistol handles recoil well. This pistol has a 4.5″ barrel and holds a 17-round magazine.
Three Other Popular USPSA Production Division Pistols
Tied for third place among USPSA Production pistols are two SIG Sauer 9mm handguns along with the well-known 9mm Glock 34. The long-slide Glock G34 ($700 retail) was used by 9% of the Production Division shooters at the USPSA Nationals. Likewise 9% of the shooters used SIG Sauer’s P320 ($600 retail) or the uprated P320 X5 Legion model ($900 retail). The P320 and P320 X5 are very similar, but the X5 offers an optics-ready slide, a longer frame, flared magazine bases, and skeletonized trigger. Shooting Sports USA states: “A heavy gun at 41.7 ounces, the X5 is a specially-designed version of the P320 for competitive shooting. Equipped with a grip module that has a weighted insert and an elongated slide… the X5 is not only popular for Production division, but also for Carry Optics competition.”
This Editor owned a Glock 34 for many years. My gun was very accurate, helping me win local IDPA matches. With its low bore axis, the Glock 34 comes back on target very quickly so you can make fast follow-up shots. As you’d expect, my Glock was extremely reliable. However, I was not a fan of the Glock’s trigger pull, which was somewhat vague and inconsistent. I think one reason for the #1 ranking of the CZ Shadow 2 is its superior trigger.

If you’re looking for a space-saving handgun storage system, consider the Easy Use Gun Hangers from USA GunClub. These vinyl-coated, wire hangers organize handguns below the shelves in your gunsafe, freeing up storage space above the shelves. To use the handgun hangers, simply slide each hanger on the shelf and then slip your pistol’s barrel over the lower rod. Handgun Hangers are intended for guns with an overall length of 10 inches or shorter. They will fit shelves that are at least 11 inches deep and 5/8-1 inch in thickness. Handgun Hangers will hold handguns .22 caliber and up, though the fit is a bit snug on .22s. A four-pack of Handgun Hangers costs $9.99. This product has been Amazon’s #1 Best Seller among handgun storage accessories.
WARNING — Always Make Sure Handgun is UNLOADED when using Handgun Hangers!!
USA GunClub also offers an Over-Under Hanger that holds two handguns — one above the shelf, and one below. A two-pack of Over-Under Hangers (capable of holding four handguns) costs $9.99. This may be a good solution for you. This editor personally prefers the standard model, so I can use the upper surface of the shelf to hold odd-shaped items such as cameras, binoculars, and miscellaneous valuables.

Each rifle will also receive an inspection tag, verifying participation in the inspection process.
Over 8 million Americans purchased their first firearm, typically handguns, over the last year and a half. These first-time gun owners definitely need to train with their new guns. In addition, all CCW permit holders should definitely practice regularly. For many, pistol practice is an indoor experience. Indoor ranges are most convenient for those who live near urban centers, where the biggest threats to public safety currently exist. This article talks about indoor firearms training and the proper procedures you should follow at indoor ranges.
This Video Covers Basic Gun Range Safety Rules and Etiquette
FIVE IMPORTANT SAFETY PROCEDURES for Indoor Ranges
1. Follow the Three Fundamental Rules for Safe Gun Handling
ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
2. Follow ALL Range Officer Instructions
ROs are the first and final authority on any range and their decisions are generally final. Arguing with a Range Officer may just get you thrown out.
3. Don’t Bother Others or Touch Their Guns
Respect other shooters’ privacy unless a safety issue arises. Do NOT engage other shooters to correct a perceived safety violation unless absolutely necessary – inform the RO instead. NEVER handle or touch another shooter’s firearm without their permission!
4. Know Your Range’s Rules
Review and understand any and all range rules and requirements/expectations. For example, what is the range’s maximum rate of fire? Are you allowed to collect your brass?
5. Know What To Do During a Cease Fire
IMMEDIATELY set down your firearm, pointed downrange, and STEP AWAY from the shooting booth (or bench). Range Officers do not want shooters trying to “secure/unload” their firearms in a cease fire situation — they want the shooters separated from their guns instantly.
BAD RANGE BEHAVIOR — Five Things NOT to Do at the Range
Here are the five worst behaviors we’ve seen at indoor ranges. These behaviors are both dangerous and inconsiderate. Any one of these behaviors can get you permanently banned from an indoor range.
1. Sweeping other individuals after loading a weapon behind the firing line is very bad. All your weapons should be empty until you reach your shooting station.
2. Turning the handgun sideways while trying to clear a malfunction or insert/remove a magazine. This will point the muzzle at a fellow shooter. Or, after shooting a gun, the shooter fails to clear the weapon and then places the gun somewhere near the shooting station with the muzzle in an unsafe position.
3. Reacting unpredictably when firing a high recoil handgun. We’ve seen people take a second shot by accident with the muzzle way off target.
4. Not obeying range commands — in particular continuing to shoot during called cease-fires.
5. Poorly aimed shooting that hits target frames or carriers, causing ricochets.
Double-Up on Hearing Protection When Shooting Indoors
When shooting indoors we recommend quality muffs with earplugs underneath, offering double protection. When inside an enclosed range, with other shooters blasting away right next to you, you really need effective hearing protection. But you also need to hear range commands and be able to communicate. That’s why we recommend electronic muffs with plugs underneath.
For pistol shooting, we like the latest Howard Leight Impact Pro Muffs. These offer an impressive 30 dB Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). In addition, these muffs are pretty comfortable and offer Headphone Functionality so you can connect to your smartphone, MP3 player, or other audio device. These muffs are a good value. These are an Amazon’s Choice for $56.35.
Shown is the Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm model. The M&P 45 is the same except for chambering.
You’ll hear some shooters complain loudly about the (perceived) lack of accuracy of their handguns. Well, sometimes the problem IS the gun, but other times the problem is “driver error”. At the range, we often hear guys blame their gun for poor accuracy, when in fact the real problem is lack of operator skill. This saga, posted a while back on Facebook, is a case in point.
Here’s the story. A gentleman attending an armorer’s course at Smith & Wesson was loudly dissing a S&W M&P 45, claiming it could not shoot. Very loudly he tells the instructor, “the M&P 45 one of our officers is carrying is sh*t”. He then trash-talks the gun, saying that both he and his officer couldn’t get the gun to shoot decent groups, either with FMJ or duty ammo.
Well it seems that Gregory Grutter, S&W’s Chief Firearms Instructor, happened to overhear these vociferous complaints, so Grutter asked to test-fire the M&P 45 pistol. Grutter put a couple of his business cards up at 15 yards, then shot one with Winchester Ranger SXT and the other with Winchester White Box ammo. Grutter’s best group was about half an inch, measured with OnTarget. Check it out:
We’re told that, after hearing the litany of complaints, Grutter walked over to the loud-mouthed grumbler and asked: “Hey Sir, can I shoot it?
“Have at it, I don’t want that POS back!” said Mr. Negative.
Kharma time baby… In Grutter’s hands the M&P performed superbly. Here are Grutter’s two 5-shot groups, each shot at 15 yards with the .45 ACP Smith & Wesson pistol. Pretty darn impressive:
After seeing this, the complainer asked: “Why did you shoot your cards — Ain’t got no targets?”
Grutter smiled and replied: “Nah… in case you or your officer want to learn how to shoot [this way] you will have the numbers to call.” Badda Bing!
Koenig Triumphs for 19th Time
Team Ruger Captain Doug Koenig has just won the Bianchi Cup (NRA Action Pistol Championship) for the 19th time in his career. That is a remarkable accomplishment, as the the Bianchi Cup is considered by many to be the most unforgiving and difficult pistol competition on the planet. This legendary competition draws the top pistoleros from around the world. The Bianchi is Tough — for a chance to win overall, you basically have to “shoot clean”, with perfect stages.
Koenig won the Open Division and finished First Overall, capturing the title with a final 1920-182 Aggregate — truly impressive. Koenig took the win shooting a Ruger Custom Shop SR1911 Competition pistol. This championship was held at the Green Valley Rifle & Pistol Club in Hallsville, MO.
Koenig nailed perfect scores of 480 on all four Bianchi Cup events: Practical, Barricade, Moving Target and Falling Plates. That quadruple perfect performance earned Koenig an Aggregate score of 1920. In addition he completed the match with 182 total X-Ring hits, six more than the nearest competitor. By the way, Koenig (aka König) means “King” in the German language. There is no question that Koenig is King of the Bianchi Cup.
“Winning the Bianchi Cup title for the 19th time in my career is very special on its own,” said Koenig. “But to do so after the difficult year we’ve all faced, and to do so wearing a Team Ruger jersey, has made this win that much more meaningful for me.”
What skills does it take to win a Bianchi Cup? You need speed, accuracy, control, and discipline. Koenig explains some of these techniques in these two videos below. You’ll find 30 more Doug Koenig Videos on the NSSF YouTube Channel:
