Great Print and eBook Resources for Hunters

Nathan Foster Practical Guide Long Range Hunting Cartridges Hunting Rifles

We are now in the thick of the 2023 fall hunting season now. Here are two great books that can help make your fall hunt a success. If you are a serious hunter (or aspire to be) here are two resources you should definitely add to your library. These two excellent books are offered in both print and e-Book formats.

Written by a highly-skilled New Zealand hunter with decades of field experience, the Practical Guide to Long Range Hunting Cartridges tells you what you need to know about hunting cartridge performance. In no-nonsense terms, this book reveals how various rounds actually perform in a wide variety of game species. Nathan’s first book, The Practical Guide to Long Range Hunting Rifles, is a classic — one of the best books ever written on choosing and using a hunting rifle. We recommend both books highly. NOTE: You can also save 10% with a two-book bundle.

If you really want to learn about long-range hunting, listen to a pro like Nathan Foster who has spent decades in the wild, harvesting over 7500 head of game. His classic Guide to Hunting Rifles analyzes what you need in a hunting firearm and compares various action/stock/barrel/scope options. This book also provides some practical stalking and shooting tips for hunters. Nathan’s 415-page companion book on Hunting Cartridges guides you through the process of choosing cartridge and projectile(s) for your hunts. Nathan examines the pros and cons of various cartridges so that the reader can select the best cartridge and projectile to get the job done. This book represents years of first-hand research, testing scores of calibers/loads in the field.

Nathan is truly a hunting expert. Nathan has spent thousands of hours in the field and he knows the subject cold. Unlike some outdoor writers, Nathan doesn’t pull punches — he tells the unvarnished truth about what works and what doesn’t. Here’s what Nathan says about these two books:

Nathan Foster Practical Guide Long Range Hunting CartridgesFor several years, I have received two types of email. The first question is which is the right rifle for me? The second question is which is the right cartridge? My first book dealt with the accurate rifle. This second book deals with long range hunting cartridge selection. I firmly believe that there has been a huge gap in education regarding optimal long range hunting cartridge performance. In many instances, both hunters and bullet manufacturers do not understand what’s required to achieve goals. Many times, the wrong tools are used for long range hunting. This book seeks to remedy these problems.

In the Practical Guide to Long Range Hunting Cartridges, I start with the fundamentals of game killing — but from the perspective of the long range hunter (also encountering close range shots). This section is not politically correct in any way, as after the study of anatomy, I explore worst case scenarios in as much depth as ideal shot placement.

The second section of the book is a study of projectile design. I wanted to get right down to the finer details of the long range hunting bullet in this section, exploring manufacturers, manufacturing techniques, and ways in which the end user can perform preliminary testing as well as bullet modifications.

The third section explains how to select a long range hunting cartridge. The system I have used here is based on a selection method I developed over the years to help clients worldwide. This method takes individual circumstances into consideration rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. It is a system that relies on plain common sense based on research. The fourth section of the book is the cartridge section. Cartridge information is presented in a set format with Pro/Con summary tables. In many instances I have included my own load notes.

Czech Group Plans to Acquire Federal, CCI, Remington Ammo, Speer, HEVI-Shot from Vista Outdoor

vista outdoor remington speer federal cci factory ammunition business sale csg Czechoslovak group acquisition

Big news for the shooting world — Vista Outdoor (NYSE:VSTO) is planning on selling its outdoor sporting products business to Czechoslovak Group A.S. (“CSG”) for $1.91 billion. This will involve transfer of some of the biggest names in the shooting/reloading world including: Federal, CCI, Remington Ammo, Speer, and Hevi-Shot. The sale and take-over is expected to be completed in 2024. We believe Alliant Powder will also be sold but that was not mentioned in the news release.

This represents a big change for the United States. Soon America’s largest commercial powder and ammunition manufacturer will be controlled by a European enterprise. CSG had previously acquired Fiocchi in 2022, and soon it will hold a very large segment of the total global ammunition market with the $1.91 billion deal to take over Vista Outdoor’s ammunition enterprises. READ Official Transaction Report.

vista outdoor remington speer federal cci factory ammunition business sale csg Czechoslovak group acquisition

Vista Outdoor’s current Sporting Products CEO Jason Vanderbrink will continue to lead the Sporting Products business and the U.S. headquarters will remain in Anoka, Minnesota. Vanderbrink stated: “We are confident that CSG is a great home for our leading ammunition brands. The company is fully committed to our iconic American brands and expanding our legacy of U.S. manufacturing, support for military and law enforcement customers, and investments in conservation and our hunting and shooting heritage.”

We are told that the approximately 4,000 Vista Outdoor employees now employed at four American factories will continue to work at those facilities to produce CCI, Federal, HEVI-Shot, Remington, and Speer products. According to SGB Media: “To effect the transaction, Vista Outdoor will separate its Outdoor Products business from its Sporting Products business, and CSG will merge one of its subsidiaries with Vista Outdoor (holding only the Sporting Products business), with current public stockholders of Vista Outdoor receiving shares of Outdoor Products … and approximately $750 million in cash in the aggregate. The transaction will be treated as a taxable sale of a stockholder’s Vista Outdoor shares for the Outdoor Products shares and cash consideration they receive in the merger, allowing stockholders to recover tax basis and recognize built-in gain and loss in their Vista Outdoor shares.”

David Štěpán, Member of the CSG Board and Investment Director for CSG International Projects, stated: “Vista Outdoor’s Sporting Products business is vertically integrated, has excellent financial results and is well invested. Thanks to this acquisition, CSG will become one of the most important ammunition manufacturers in the world with a comprehensive portfolio across all calibers.”

According to the Business Wire: “The proposed transaction would be CSG’s largest acquisition to date after a long series of smaller acquisitions focused on the European market, including the acquisition of Fiocchi Munizioni in 2022. It also represents the largest acquisition in the history of the Czech defense industry. The transaction is expected to close in calendar year 2024, subject to shareholder approval, receipt of necessary regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Upon closing, Sporting Products will become a wholly owned subsidiary of CSG, operating as a private company. Jason Vanderbrink will remain CEO of the Sporting Products business and the U.S. headquarters will remain in Anoka, Minnesota.”

In Memoriam: Philip Hemphill, Champion Pistol Shooter

Philip Hemphill 2019 pistol championship camp perry ssusa lapua

Philip Hemphill, Pistol Champion, Has Left the Range
We are sad to announce that champion pistol shooter and Team Lapua member, Philip Wayne Hemphill, has passed away at age 71 at his home in Meridian, Mississippi. Hemphill was one of the greatest-ever American pistol shooters. Hemphill was a 10-time National Police Pistol Combat Champion and two-time NRA Precision Pistol Champion. Above is Hemphill after winning the .22 LR Rimfire pistol championships at Camp Perry in 2019.

Philip Hemphill 2019 pistol championship camp perry ssusa lapuaPhilip Hemphill served 30+ years with the Mississippi Highway Patrol before retiring as a Captain in 2011. The Shooting Wire recounted his remarkable history with the National Police Pistol Combat (PPC) series: “Hemphill shot his first PPC in 1985 in Des Moines, Iowa. He competed every year [except 2005] until he served as a referee in 2008. In 2008, he returned to the range in Albuquerque as a shooter to compete one final time, and captured his tenth title. [In his competition career] Hemphill represented Lapua, Team Zero, Rock River Arms, and AimPoint. He remained one of the few people who drew the attention of competitors, fellow vendors, and spectators at shooting events.”

Funeral services for Mr. Philip Wayne Hemphill will begin at 11:00 am Monday, October 16, 2023 at Cross Mountain Ministries in Porterville, Mississippi. Online condolences may be expressed at robertbarhamffh.com which hosts the Philip Hemphill obituary and photo collection.

Philip enjoyed squirrel hunting and turkey hunting. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandsons, who lovingly referred to him as Papaw. He was a friend to all who knew him, with friendships spanning all over the world.

Here is an NRA-TV interview with Philip Hemphill from 2016. Hemphill has been a 10-Time NRA National Police Pistol Champion, and has won multiple National Pistol Championships:

Free State Law Summaries Online

If you don’t want to spend the money on the book, there is a FREE alternative. There’s a very helpful set of State Law Summaries on the web, presented by PewPewTactical.com. Despite the silly name, the PewPewTactical website has an abundance of information that is particularly beneficial for pistol shooters and CCW holders.

One of the best features of PewPewTactical.com is the Gun Laws by State online reference guide. We looked through four of these State Law Summaries and were impressed by the depth of the coverage. But we caution — if you have specific legal questions, particularly with recently-enacted statutes, you should consult a licensed attorney for your state (or the state to which you will travel). In addition, many of the State Law Summaries have not been updated for 3-5 YEARS! But they are still a good place to start. Below are links to state law articles from PewPewTactical.com. Sunday Gunday: Guns of the October CMP Western Games

CMP Western Games October Highpower high power rifle M1 Carbine Garand Sniper match

The CMP Western Games “Fall Classic” event — featuring CMP Highpower Rifle and CMP Pistol Matches — takes place next week, October 10-15, 2023 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility near Phoenix, Arizona. This year, the CMP decided to move the Western CMP Games back to its original October timeslot. Although the CMP’s most recent Western Games were held in March of 2023, there will also be a fall Western Games this year, as was the tradition in past years.

CMP Western Games October Highpower high power rifle M1 Carbine Garand Sniper match

The decision to move Western Games back to October was reached after the CMP conducted a survey of competitors. Though the results (155 submissions) indicated spring was favorable (65%) versus fall (34%), the final decision was based on cost to host the event. Spring training for baseball causes inflated expenses for hotels, rental cars, and flights in the earlier months of the year. An October event allows more affordable travel/accommodations for Western Games participants. That should allow more competitors to enjoy the events at Ben Avery.

The 2023 October Western Games will have a condensed schedule of events:

Garand, Springfield, Vintage & Modern Military Matches
Carbine Match
Rimfire Sporter Match
Mid-Range 3X600
80 Shot Rifle
2-Man Rifle Team
EIC Service Rifle

CMP Match Pistol 2700
EIC Service Pistol
.22 Rimfire Pistol
EIC Service Revolver
Military & Police Service Pistol
and 1911 As-Issued Pistol Match

The Western CMP Games will feature three days of Garand/Springfield/Vintage & Modern Military Matches, a Carbine Match, a Rimfire Sporter Match, a Vintage Sniper Match, and a Rifle Basic Class. The CMP Highpower Rifle Matches include the CMP Team HP Clinic with Live Fire, a 4-Man Team Match, three days of CMP 800 Aggregate Matches and a CMP Service Rifle EIC Match. The Highpower Rifle portion of the Western Fall Classic will include a 2-Man Team Match, two days of CMP 800 Aggregate Matches, a CMP Service Rifle EIC Match and a Mid-Range 3×600 event. For educational purposes, a Rifle & Pistol Marksmanship 101 Classes with introductory EIC Matches are also part of the October lineup. There will also be a GSM New Shooter Clinic, a Highpower Rifle Clinic, and an M1 Maintenance Clinic.

Handgun shooters can compete in 4 days of Pistol Matches including CMP Match Pistol 2700, CMP .22 Rimfire Pistol EIC Match, CMP EIC Service Pistol Match, CMP 1911 As-Issued Pistol Match, Military & Police Service Pistol Match and the NEW CMP Service Revolver EIC Match.

The CMP M1 Carbine Match is part of the CMP Games program that already includes Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Matches. “As-issued” U. S. Military M1 Carbines are fired over a 45-shot course of fire at 100 yards on either the old military “A” target or the “SR” target. The course includes 5 sighters and 10 shots for record prone slow fire in 15 minutes, a 10-shot rapid fire prone series in 60 seconds, a 10-shot rapid fire sitting series in 60 seconds and 10 shots slow fire standing in 10 minutes.

On October 7th, Smith & Wesson, a leading American gunmaker for over 169 years, celebrates the Grand Opening of its new Tennessee Headquarters and production center. The Grand Opening event will feature a shooting day, product demonstrations, and fun events.

Since 1852, Smith & Wesson had been based in Springfield, Massachusetts. Now a big change is taking place. The company announced in September 2021 that it would relocate its headquarters from Massachusetts to East Tennessee, along with distribution, assembly, and other major operations. The Smith & Wesson Headquarters Grand Opening and Fall Festival event takes place Saturday, October 7 from noon to 8 p.m. at 1852 Proffitt Springs Road in Maryville, TN.

The Shooting Wire reports that: “The new Maryville facilities will house the company’s headquarters, plastic injection molding, pistol and long gun assembly and distribution centers. The company’s longtime home, Springfield, Massachusetts, will remain operational with all forging, machining, metal finishing, and revolver assembly staying behind. More than 1,000 S&W employees will still be employed there, but it’s a decided diminishment for the facilities that have been home to the company since 1832. More than 750 jobs are relocating from Springfield, Massachusetts, Deep River, Connecticut and Columbia, Missouri, to Maryville.”

Smith & Wesson’s President and CEO Mark Smith cited several key factors in the decision to move S&W’s corporate HQ from Massachusetts to Tennessee:

  • Support for the 2nd Amendment
  • Business friendly environment
  • Quality of life for employees
  • Cost of living and affordability
  • Access to higher education institutions
  • Availability of qualified labor for operations
  • Favorable location for efficiency of distribution
  • GunTalk Media Will Stream Live from the Grand Opening
Gun Talk Media will broadcast LIVE from the Grand Opening of Smith & Wesson’s new facility on October 7, 2023. Beginning at 1:00 pm EST Ryan Gresham and Kevin Jarnagin host a LIVE broadcast throughout the day, giving viewers who might not be able to attend an inside look at the grand opening.

This broadcast provides an exclusive look at the new premises, interviews with key personnel, and insights into the latest offerings from one of the most renowned firearms manufacturers in the world.

Congress Votes to Restore Hunter Education, In Rebuke to Biden

Congress senate BSCA biden hunter education archery Miguel Cardona senate house

CONGRESS MAKES BIPARTISAN REBUKE of PRESIDENT BIDEN’S HUNTER EDUCATION ATTACKS
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) praised the U.S. Congress for the swift and decisive vote to rebuke President Joe Biden’s unprecedented move to defund scholastic hunter education and archery programs available for youths. The U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 5110, the Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act, in a 424-1 vote and the U.S. Senate hot-lined the legislation, passing it by unanimous consent. The legislation, introduced by U.S. Reps. Mark Green (R-TN) and Richard Hudson (R-NC) is now headed to President Biden’s desk for consideration.

The White House has not signaled whether the president will sign or veto the legislation. However, Congress approved the bill in a rare and overwhelming veto-proof majority. Should the president veto the legislation, Congress could override the president’s veto and enact the law.

“This is a tremendous victory for true and proven firearm safety, as well as a reminder of how Congress can unite to protect the American public from special-interest driven agendas,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “This should have never been an issue. Congress never wrote into the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that hunter education and archery programs were ineligible for funding. That was a unilateral decision to appease gun control and anti-hunting special interests. It was an unforced error that the Biden administration refused to acknowledge. Congress, as the representatives of the people, has spoken and spoken loudly and clearly.”

Congress senate BSCA biden hunter education archery Miguel Cardona senate house

The Biden administration wrongly claimed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) forbid the funding of school-based hunter education and archery programs. That was never in the language or intent of the law. Congress appealed to the Biden administration to reverse course in several bipartisan and bicameral letters. Biden could have resolved the issue by simply reversing the policy to deny funds for the essential scholastic programs by ending the policy put into place by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.

Congress acted when administration officials refused. Congress passed the Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act less than two months after it was introduced. NSSF is deeply grateful to Congressmen Green and Hudson for their leadership to restore hunter education and archery funding for schools, as well as for Congress for setting aside partisan politics to represent the interests of all Americans and true and proven firearm safety programs.

Gun Owner Groups Challenge New Carry Restrictions in California

concealed carry CCW california lawsuit may bonta gavin newsom

Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) teamed up with Gun Owners of California (GOC) to file suit challenging portions of SB 2, a bill that anti-gun Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law this week. This unconstitutional legislation was passed in response to the Bruen decision (which ended the state’s draconian “may-issue” policy). As signed by Newsom, California SB 2 will:

    — Create vast, restricted “sensitive locations” where concealed carrying would be prohibited, including all private property unless expressly permitted by the owner;
    — Require 16 hours of training;
    — Significantly increase the costs associated with securing a permit.

This lawsuit challenging SB 2 was filed in the U.S. District Court (Central District South) in Calfornia. The action, entitled May et al v. Bonta specifically goes after the “sensitive locations” provision of the law. Several other anti-gun states have enacted similar unconstitutional legislation in response to the Bruen decision, and GOA and GOF are a part of litigation in several of these cases.

Erich Pratt, GOA’s Senior Vice President, issued the following statement:

“This is just the latest assault on our rights in California. Just as concerning, Governor Gavin Newsom has already made his anti-gun intentions quite clear: he wants to effectively repeal the Second Amendment. Sadly, his acknowledgment that doing so would be the only way to enact more gun control did not dissuade him from violating his oath when he signed this law into effect, but we are fully prepared to fight back.”

Sam Paredes, on behalf of the board for GOF and in his role as the Executive Director of Gun Owners of California, added:

“Pro-gun groups in California have had success when pushing back on legislation like this –just look at our victory last week against the state’s magazine ban. And just like in that case, we are confident SB 2 will be overturned. I’ve been warning governors and legislatures across the country since the Bruen decision that these ‘response bills’ will not stand, but unfortunately, many have still been pushed through. That won’t stop us however – states should fall in line, or we will make them.”
