“God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.” — Rudyard Kipling
Today, May 14, 2023, is Mother’s Day. There are more than 85 million mothers in the United States, and today is the day we recognize all those ladies who brought life into the world.
Mothers deserve our praise, our devotion, and our concern for their health and happiness.
Be good to your mother, cherish her, and love her without fail… always. In her latter years, attend to her needs, help her with her health, and take time to bring brightness (and laughter) into her life. Let her know that you appreciate all the sacrifices she made, and that you are grateful for all that she did for her children and family.
This Mother’s Day tribute was created by a man who had lost his mother. It will help all of us appreciate all the things our mothers did for us.
Here are some quotes for Mother’s Day:
“Only mothers can think of the future — because they give birth to it in their children.” — Maxim Gorky
“Men are what their mothers made them.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Such a mysterious business, motherhood. How brave a woman must be to embark on it.” ― M.L. Stedman
“All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” ― Abraham Lincoln
As today is Mother’s Day 2021, here’s a story about one very special mother, Polly Tubb. Now 93 years old, Polly is notable as a very talented lady shooter who reared one of the greatest marksmen in history, David Tubb.
We expect you’ve heard of David Tubb, 11-time NRA National High Power Champion, and 6-time NRA Long Range Champion. Without question, David is one of the greatest rifle shooters who ever lived. What you may not know is that David came from a family of shooters. David’s father, George Tubb, was a nationally-ranked High Power competitor. What’s more (now this may surprise you), David’s mother “Polly” was was a great shooter in her own right. When she wasn’t rearing a future Champion, Polly was hitting the X-Ring at rifle matches.
Pauline (“Polly”) S. Tubb of Canadian, Texas, earned several rifle championships during the course of her shooting career. In this photo, Polly took a moment to appear for a photo after winning the 1962 National Woman’s Bolt Rifle championship at Camp Perry. One shooter who competed against Polly observed: “I was there as a 1962 Pennsylvania State Team junior! I remember Polly. She beat some of the best Army and Marine shooters and always did it with style and good humor.”
We spoke to David Tubb this morning. He is spending the day with his mother Polly, who remains happy and vibrant at age 93. David says Polly is still enjoying life, she still plays the piano, and she remains an inspiration to him and to all her family.

Today, May 9, 2021, is Mother’s Day. There are more than 85 million mothers in the United States, and today is the day we recognize all those ladies who brought life into the world.
With the continuing effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic it can be particularly difficult for mothers in late life. Those living in senior facilities are at high risk. Do all you can for mom, particularly in these trying times.
Be good to your mother, cherish her, and love her without fail… always. In her latter years, attend to her needs, help her with her health, and take time to bring brightness (and laughter) into her life. Let her know that you appreciate all the sacrifices she made, and that you are grateful for all that she did for her children and family.

When used with rifle or shotgun, these Impact Sports muffs should be reversed, so that the higher part of the relief cut-out is in front. That provides more comb clearance.
Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10th, is just a few days away. Of course don’t forget the flowers and cooking dinner for the Special Lady. And if she enjoys shooting, why not get her a nice set of electronic muffs? Amazon has Howard Leight electronic muffs in pink — perfect for Mother’s Day. These popular Impact Sport muffs are reliable, reasonably comfortable, and easy to store. Built-in directional microphones amplify range commands and other ambient sounds to 82 dB, providing more natural listening and enhanced communication. These muffs carry a 22 NRR Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). The bottom of the muffs is thinner for clearance on a rifle stock, and the headband is adjustable. These Impact Sport Earmuffs include AUX input and 3.5 mm connection cord for MP3 players and smartphones.
More Color Options (If Pink Isn’t Her Favorite)
These same Impact Sport earmuffs are offered in four other color choices: Black, Green, Camo, and Blue. The pink version — ideal for Mother’s Day, is currently $44.80 at Amazon. Other colors run from $43.95 (blue) to $64.93 (camo) on Amazon.
Double Up with Plugs for Maximum Protection
This Editor owns and uses these muffs, but I normally “double up” with plugs underneath muffs when shooting rifles. If I am backed away from the firing line spotting or observing, I can use these NRR 22 muffs alone. For regular shooting, we recommend using foam earplugs underneath Electronic Muffs.

Today is Mother’s Day. There are more than 85 million mothers in the United States, and today is the day we recognize all those ladies who brought life into the world.
This Editor lost his mother last July, so this Mother’s Day is particularly poignant — my first without her. Be good to your mother, cherish her, and love her without fail… always. In her latter years, attend to her needs, help her with her health, and take time to bring brightness (and laughter) into her life. Let her know that you appreciate all the sacrifices she made, and that you are grateful for all that she did for her children and family.
This Mother’s Day tribute was created by another man who recently lost his mother. It will help all of us appreciate all the things our mothers did for us…

Today we want to wish Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms around the world. All of us must remember that we literally owe our lives and our well-being to our mothers, who brought us into the world. Without the love, support, caring, and nuturing of our mothers, none of us would be here. So to mothers everywhere, we say:
“Thank you. Bless you. May your lives be filled with happiness today and everyday.”
Here is a photo of the one of the greatest moms in the shooting community, Nancy Tompkins, along with two of her little girls (who both turned into pretty good shooters themselves). On Nancy’s right is Michelle Gallagher, a top long-range shooter. On the left is Sherri Jo Gallagher, who was the second woman in history to capture the NRA National High Power Championship at Camp Perry. Who was the first woman ever to accomplish that feat? You guessed it — Nancy Tompkins, Sherri’s mom, was the first-ever female High Power Champion.
Team Smith & Wesson shooter Julie Golob has a message for this Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 11th). Julie writes: “While some are using Mother’s Day week to push a gun control agenda, I’d like to encourage moms to ‘Take a Moment’. Talk to your kids about firearms safety. Help them learn what to do around firearms and have an open, honest discussion about guns and gun safety.
I truly believe that, no matter if you are pro-gun or anti-gun, everyone should know and understand the basic rules of firearm safety. It is equally important for parents to have the discussion about guns and what to do if your child finds one. Both the NSSF’s Project ChildSafe and the NRA’s Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program are excellent. They offer resources for parents, educators, and child care providers to help ensure kids stay safe.
Julie encourages all who read this to share the message. So far, on Facebook, the “Take a Moment” image has been shared 639 times, and seen by 66,112 people. That’s the power of the internet. Julie says: “Thank you all so much for helping me spread the importance of firearms safety.”

Today is Mother’s Day. For your own mother (or the mother of your children), do something special today. Bring her flowers, cook her a meal, take her someplace fun. Remember that life passes quickly — we need to take these moments to say a heartfelt “thank-you” and “I love you” to our mothers, and appreciate the chance to be together. A lot of shooters are edging into their fifties and sixties. We’re getting older, and so are our mothers. My own mother turned 88 years old earlier this week. Who knows how many more “Mothers’ Days” she and I can celebrate together? Perhaps other readers are in a similar situation. So… get away from the computer and go spend some “quality time” with your mom today. She deserves it.
