Dedicated Website for .222 Remington Fans
Last week we revealed that Lapua will resume production of .222 Remington Brass. If you’re thinking of chambering a rifle in this very accurate caliber, or if you already have a .222 Rem, we’ve found a useful resource on the web for you.
Forum member Peter Simonsen has created a new website, TripleDeuce.Net. Peter tells us: “I started a little informative (non-commercial) web site about the .222 Remington, TripleDeuce.Net. You’re welcome to visit and share your thoughts and ideas.” Peter’s site includes extensive reloading advice, plus links to the major bullet-makers and powder manufacturers. His Reloading Page shows targets shot with different powder/bullet combos using Peter’s .222 Rem factory rifles. Unfortunately Peter omits actual powder charge weights — so one must still go back to the reloading manuals. Peter offers this advice for those getting started with the Triple Deuce cartridge:
“I religiously use the load data right off the Hodgdon web site. Recently I have gravitated toward using the old tried and true IMR4198 and H4198 powders for hunting using 40gr bullets. These two powders provide a velocity edge over the other powder choices while still maintaining safe and acceptable pressure levels. You can see this in the Hodgdon data where a max load of IMR4198 yields 3583 fps whereas H322 produces 3313 fps. So for hunting where higher velocity and terminal performance are important and accuracy is as good or close I would choose one of the two 4198 powders. This situation is similar, although not as dramatic, with 50gr bullets.
For target shooting H322 works extremely well. H4895 also provides impressive results and is a chosen powder for accuracy baseline testing by some manufacturers. I have begun experimenting with Vihtavuori N133 and Accurate 2015. Both seem very promising. But H322 and H4895 are two [dependable choices.]”
Its about time, the .222 has been one of my favorate cartridges ever,I currently have three guns chambered for this round. Please keep it going!
how to use unique gunpowder for a reduced load
I have fed my family, earned a living, paid for children to be delivered, and have had over 45 plus years with from one to three .222’s….. this cartridge is still earning it’s keep, feeding me clothing me and housing me and with the 21st century bullets available and excellent components this effective and efficient cartridge will be around for a long long time!!!!!!!!
I haven’t touched off a single round in about 20years, since I moved from PA to suburban DC / Balto. I can, however tell you that 20gr. of IMR 4198 in Rem. cases trimmed to 1.70″, using CCI200 primers with Hornady or Sierra bullets produce the best groups in my Rem 700V.( 5-shot @ 100yd. under 1/2″ consistently) I may not be able to tell you what I ate for lunch but the important info always stays with you!
The .222 Remington given to me by my dad some time ago was recently stolen from my house in a robbery. I need a replacement value for it and the ~400 rounds of ammo for it that he loaded. Thanks for any help.
Anyone have a bolt for a 222 Model 788 Remington for sale. Mine is lost and would like to start shooting it again.
Used to have a Remy 700 in the triple deuce and long lamented selling it. I just now bought a beautiful Cooper in it and can’t wait to get (re) started! So glad to see this new website!
went to sportsmans warehouse today, w/w .222rem brass 35dlrs per 100
22.5 grs imr4895 rem 61/2 primers in new w/w brass worst group was 3/4″ at 98yrds from 1956 vintage rem 722 with 26’BARREL
Still have a Sako L-46 .222 my dad got me in 1967. I have been shooting with the factory peep but getting older and now I am scoping it. I love this thing.
I recently obtained a Rem700 Classic in 222. Loading is simple…all you need is 4198 powder and a 50 gr Sierra. I enjoyed the 222 back in 1964 and kept the old RCBS dies, brass and bullets. I’m enjoying the 222 again at age 87.
I loved the .222 Rem in my old, long gone Marlin Bolt gun that was built on the small Sako action. Most accurate rifle I’d ever owned. I’ve since become a devoted TC Contender Fan & have had limited success with accuracy loads for my 14″ Super barrel & shorter barrel lengths are acknowledged to be inaccurate in .222. Recently tried some Hornaday 40 gr Vmax factory stuff & was impressed with the accuracy, about 1″ @ 100 yds. Any load suggestions for these lighter weight bullets in shorter handgun barrels ??
Hi guys. Thanks for a great website. I shoot a Brno.222 and load with 55 gr Hornady’s. Though it’s ill advised I have taken Springbuck, Blesbuck,Black Wildebeest and Hartebeest all at under 120 metres due to its superb accuracy. ( South Africa )
I’ve been shooting the venerable “triple deuce” for many decades, and I have used the cartridge for everything from gray squirrels to whitetail deer and wild hogs. I still have an older 700 BDL and an older “Red” built BR rifle on a BR22 action with a Hart barrel that still shoots groups in the .1’s.
It is sad no American rifle mfg produces this fine chambering today, for its inherent accuracy with a wide range of loads and bullets with speeds that are suitable for most varmint ranges makes it a fantastic choice.
35-40 grain bullets loaded with a few grains of Unique or 2400 makes for a super accurate reduced small game load, and when loaded with H335 and a 63gr Sierra SMP and shot under 100 yards, it takes Southern whitetails with ease.
very interesting reading
My first 222 was a Savage 340. Didn’t know anything about the cartridge but I got it anyway. That was about 9 years ago and shortly after it became my favorite all arounder. Now I have a 700 ADL in 222 with a camo stock form ebay, and a older M8-6X scope. Like the man said… from paper to little cridders to deer and wild hogs this little beast will take ‘em down.
My favorite bullets, for deer and hogs is the Speer #1029 50gr SP or 50gr Barnes TSX. In my rifle the TSX bullets like RL7, the Speer bullets don’t seem to care what powder is behind it.
I’m forever a fan of the Triple Deuce.
By the way, Savage makes a very nice little 222 presently, in American.
Started shooting a 222 in ’75. Bought a Rem 700 varmint special. Since then it have become my bench rest rifle until it was replaced by the 6ppc. Under gone truing, sleeving, BR trigger, HV barrel tight neck chamber, lock time shortened, 8x-32x-56 NF scope.Glued in Carbon fibre stock. Will small group in the high 1’s agg in the high 2’s. If I could only have one rifle I would keep this one.
Just changed from using hornady 40 gr. V_max to 50 gr.SP_SX using Blc (2) 25.3 grs.blows praire dogs high into the air.needed a heavy bullet to buck this Montana wind.very happy I did
I shoot a Cooper model 21 with a 1&half pound trigger pull Conquest 20 powder mill dot 50 objective.
Cooper model 21 varmint extreme 222 one of my favorites for shooting praire dogs in montana. Started out with 40 gr.VMax factory loads then loaded up hornady Sp Sx. 50 grain I am using 25.3 grains of BL_C (2) very explosive out to around 250 yards.
Low noise keeps the prairie dogs around.
I have has 3 rifles chambered in this, the first being a BRNO Fox when I was a boy, then a CZ, then the last a Remington 40X.
This deminutive cartidge holds its own in the gopher fields and the benchrest firing line. TO hunt i use 23.6 gr of 4320 (almost compression) under a 50 gr seer hp makes red mist of the vermin. _On the range 19.6 gr of reloader7 under a 52gr. Sierra VLD BT has turned in .167″ group at 100 yds.
I bought my Rem 722 from an older acquaintance who had bought it new in 1951, that was 10 years ago. This rifle has become one of my favorite rifles. My all purpose load is 55 grain Sierra Gameking SPBT, 23.5 grains of BLC-2 and WSR primer. This load has taken its share ofTurkeys and our smallish Blueridge Mountain Whitetails here in south central PA. I have also had similar results with the Hornady 60 grain Spire Point same powder charge and same primer.
Anyone have any reloads for 222 Rem. With IMR-3031 and Lehigh’s .224 I have the 62gr. Lehigh defense Chaos.
I started shooting .222 in a Rem 700 ADL in 1978 with 19 Gr. 4198 55 Gr. SX
I sold that gun in 2005 and just bought a CZ American through Sportsmans Guide,I like the gun very much and the Set trigger is out of this world. I don’t care much for the Box Magazine, I shoot it single shot most of the time. thanks for making this page.
In the early 80’s, I began 224 bullet swaging with a set of Corbin dies, and during those many years, I made most every kind of target and specialty bullet for various .224 caliber cartridges.
One of my most memorable bullet designs and loads involved a 222 Rem loaded with a frangible bullet for “zero” ricochet while shooting pigeons and crows around nearby cattle in dairy pastures.
That particular bullet consisted of a 22LR brass casing drawn into a 224 jacket and then swaged with a corn starch core producing a 17 gr ultra fast and totally disintegrating bullet. Load development in a 24inch barrel resulted in a load of 24 gr of H2400, yes 2400, and yielded a chrono’d velocity of 5,200+fps! Since the bullet was very light and had a more brittle brass jacket, impacts resulted in absolute destruction with zero ricochets.
I tested these bullets at 200 yards and shot the plastic square type quart oil bottles filled with water and 16-20 ounce water bottles. After examining many test impacts, it was obvious not a single piece of jacket material ever made it out or even into the back of the bottle! All bottles were exploded and ripped into almost flat plastic sheets from the impacts. Impacts on crows and pigeons was nothing short of incredibly explosive.
On a whim, I bet one of my friends my 222 would chrono faster than his 22-250 40gr loads, and he bit and the game was on. Yes, after allowing him some time to mentally ponder how he was beaten, I let him off the hook.
In 1962 I went to buy my first 222
The first year of Remington 700 production. The salesman said “sorry we don’t have it in 222 Remington but we have a 222 Remington magnum for the same price”.
That ADL shot one hole at 50 yards with factory ammo. I sold it to a friend when I went into the Army 1966. What a mistake that was!!!
I just bought a like new in box remington 700 classic 1993 and mounted an older 12x Leupold on it. Gonna use IMR 4198 start at 19 gr 50 gr Match bullets jump .010″. I hope it’s 1/2 MOA at 100 yds!
My .222 is a mod. 700 with a 22″ Lilja 3 groove barrel, 1:14 twist. My load is 25gr. 748 with a cci 450 mag. primer. Bullet is a 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip Varminter seated to just barley show signs of rifling on the bullet. Best accuracy so far is 9 consecutive shots under an inch at 500 yards. The smallest of the 3 shot groups measured .816. For close up shots at varmints out to 100 yards I use 6.7gr Unique with a 52gr nosler, cci standard primer. velocity is 1,940fps. 5 shot groups at 100 yards measure .250. Barrel has about 3,000 rounds through it with no sign of loss of accuracy. This gun will give any PPC a good run for its money!! Just thought I would share this with you all.
I do a lot of cowboy shooting and all shotgun sports. I bought this old Remington BDL heavy barrel 222 a few years ago and it shoots 3/8 groups with about any loaded fodder I put in it. I use cast bullets with gas checks and wanted to try Unique powder as I have had excellent results with 4 other rifles with this powder. thanks for you I put. Sparky
I have been trying to get CZ to chamber their cz 455/ 452 action in 222, 221 17 Rem. etc.
If enough folks wrote to cvz they might make their little ” American ” rifles in the smaller calibers we like to shoot.
Err… aah a nice rifle, with a walnut stock, at an economical price.
What is the most accurate barrel for the 222 rem thahks
I really love 222 Rem caliber.
I began with a Rem 700 BDL about 15 years ago,,,, but I always wanted an ANSCHUTZ 54 Meister Grade until I got it.
Mama mia!!!! Great groups of .20″ (five shots) 100 mts…. with H322 and Varmint Nosler Ballistic Tip 55 grs…..
I gave a present to my Anschutz 222 Rem a month ago: Swaro Z5 5-25 X 52 mm… After shooting it with a Leupold XIII B&C illuminated 3 or 4 (not sure) – 14x
I use Lapua Brass and CCI BR4 primers
I recently acquired two Rem mod Sevens in .222 Rem (315 Ser Nr appart mind you) here in Australia … to say i’m impressed with them is an understatement.
Combined with a Lee Classic Zero Error Loader … its awesome!
Hi guys, I have a Remington model 722 in 222 cal
Was my fathers, only thing done to the gun it’s been glass beded he only shot it occasionally at chucks.
