TripleDeuce.Net Website for .222 Remington Shooters
Interest in the .222 Remington cartridge has revived following Lapua’s decision in 2009 to resume production of .222 Remington Brass. If you’re thinking of chambering a rifle in this very accurate caliber, or if you already have a .222 Rem, we’ve found a useful resource on the web for you.
Forum member Peter Simonsen has created a content-rich website, TripleDeuce.Net, with plenty of valuable info for .222 shooters. Peter tells us: “I started a little informative (non-commercial) web site about the .222 Remington, TripleDeuce.Net. You’re welcome to visit and share your thoughts and ideas.” Peter’s site includes extensive reloading advice, a list of recommended components, plus links to the major bullet-makers and powder manufacturers. His Reloading Page includes load data for a wide selection of bullets, while Peter’s photo archive shows cartridge diagrams and targets shot with Peter’s .222 Rem rifles. There is even an extensive section dedicated to the 20-222 Wildcat, an excellent varmint cartridge. The 20-222 is very efficient and very accurate.
Peter offers this advice for those getting started with the Triple Deuce cartridge:
“I religiously use the load data right off the Hodgdon web site. Recently I have gravitated toward using the old tried and true IMR4198 and H4198 powders for hunting using 40gr bullets. These two powders provide a velocity edge over the other powder choices while still maintaining safe and acceptable pressure levels. You can see this in the Hodgdon data where a max load of IMR4198 yields 3583 fps whereas H322 produces 3313 fps. So for hunting where higher velocity and terminal performance are important and accuracy is as good or close I would choose one of the two 4198 powders. This situation is similar, although not as dramatic, with 50gr bullets.
For target shooting H322 works extremely well. H4895 also provides impressive results and is a chosen powder for accuracy baseline testing by some manufacturers. I have begun experimenting with Vihtavuori N133 and Accurate 2015. Both seem very promising. But H322 and H4895 are two [dependable choices.]”

Great caliber. I owned a Rem 700 varmint barreled rifle a few years ago and sold it. Dumb decision! I about to purchase a Sako varmint .222. Can’t wait to shoot it. Thanks
I own a Rem. 788 in 222. One of the early ones. This gun and load is outstandingly accurate. I have taken Hawks, Crows, Fox and a 4 point Buck with it. The buck was a neck shot at 40 yds. I load 55 gr bullets for the heavier critters. 4198 powder has worked out well for me.
Have many triple duces; Mike Walker was on his game! That round pretty much killed the 219 Donaldson although the 219 still has a die hard following! But what were you thinking shooting a bird of prey? Thats just sick not to mention against the law in most states if not all. Check your F & G Rules and Regs in your state. Shame on you. I was witness to a new female shooter showing off how well she thought she could shoot with her Model 7-243. As I spun around after the round went off, I was shocked to see the peacefully sitting redtail hawk explode as if it had digested an M-80 leaving a redmist and feathers flying through the air in front of me. This ended a 30 year friendship with this idiots boyfriend, incliding our time spent in Vietnam. He new better she should have too. Morals and self control are necessary in all aspects of this sport. In order for everyone to continue to enjoy our freedoms (aka 2nd amendment rights).
I would like to find out the distance a 222cal, rifle can be shot. I have a shultes & Larsen benchrest 222 cal. rifle from Denmark thank you much
Bought a Remington 700 BDL Varmint Special in .222 about 25 years ago and have never owned a more accurate rifle. Loading with 21 gr. of H322 pushing 52 gr. Bruno BTHP’s results in 5 shot half inch groups all day. Just wish I could buy another one.
Bought my CZ BRNO 222 Fox from a friend. Tried to load it with 55gr bullets without success.
TripleDeuce.Net convinced me to convert to 50gr bullets.
Never looked back or owned a more accurate rifle. Also works wonders on headshooting springbuck in the Kalahari!
Website has pretty much been stagnant for a long while, basically no new info. No way to interact with other 222 enthusiasts. For example the new lapua 222 brass, no info on it.
Thank you for your page.
Just looking into .222 again after 30 years no shooting. Had a new Rem 788 then. Open sights. All into tennis ball size at 50 metres with shop cartridges. Sold it. Older now and know better. I’ll hound the shows in NSW and get another one.
Regards, Kerry
Looking for a 700 BDL Varmet .222
My .222 rem 722 w/26in barrel is the most forgiving rifle-caliber combo i have ever tried.my favorite load of 22.5 gr. imr 4895 topped w/50 gr rem clsp shoot like a laser.
my savage 340 .222 rem is very accurate but scope mounts are typically so high i run out of elevation adjustment.a Bsquare mount solved that but i had to have the rings/ mount machined so that the scope was in plane with the bore. speer 52gr bucket mouths makes it a tack driver
greatest fun caliber ever
Has any one ever heard of using a 223 lee handloader to load 222 Remington?
I have a set of forester dies for my 223 and 222 and I just dont think they are interchangable. I use 223 brass to make make 222 brass. Use a good lube very sparingly so you dont get folds in the shoulder and dont press the case in one stroke. Use about 4 short strokes to get the full length sizing done. I find 223 brass at the range all the time so if you mess up with an occasional case it is not a problem. IN fact I have used some of the brass that has a small amount of folds in the should and have not found it to hamper accuracy. You will need to trim the case and if using millitary brass ream the primer pockets. military brass seems to be harder than standard brass so I purchased a lyman primer punch that has a carbide sizing ball. Much smoother reloading with that. You could anneal the brass to soften some but with so much of the stuff lying around i dont, I just make more brass
My .222 is a Rem. Mod. 700 with a Lilja 22 inch stainless 3 groove barrel, 1:14 twist. Topped off with a Burris 6×24 scope. My load is with Lapua cases and CCI 450 mag. primers. Bullets are 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip Varminters loaded with 25gr. 748 and seated so just a slight sign of rifling can be seen on bullet. Best accuracy has been 9 consecutive shots under an inch at 500 yards. One of the 3 shot groups measured .816. For close up shots at varmints out to 100 yards, I use Nosler 52gr. bullets loaded with 6.7gr. of Unique. Velocity is at 1,940fps and 5 shot groups measure .250. The barrel has about 3,000 rnds through it with no sign of accuracy loss. This gun will give any ppc a good run for the money. For the love of the caliber and for more than 50 years with it, I just wanted to share this with you all.
G day what is the most accurate
bullet in the 222 thanks
I have a 222R 18″ heavy barrel on a Martini action. Bought from a benchrest competitor in Cincinnati years ago. Suspect it was a truck gun. Am searching for good brass. gun will fire standard 222 but wont extract.
Tom
Hi Thomas i just picked up a westly Richards martini in 222 Rimmed.
I am using 5.6x50r brass trim it back use a regular 222 die with a 357 mag shell holder
Neil
I have TC Contenders in the 222 and find the H322 powder to work the best in all four barrels and Hornady 52 & 53 Match bullets to work best in the 14″ barrels. The 22″ Bullbery likes thr Berger 52gr. bullet the best. The 22″ will shoot under a 1/4″ at a 100YD. I shoot the 14″ in IHMSA matches and have been doing good with it. I know if a beter shooter were to shoot it it would perform even beter.
Star Line is now making brass in 222 Rem and I have 400 rounds and I like it as much the Lapua brass and it is half the cost! Try the Star Line brass if are in need of brass.
I picked up a 1993 Remington 700 classic three years ago in 222 cal. After pillar bedding and putting a Timney trigger on it it shoots 1/2 moa all the time H322 21.5 GR with 52 gr hpfb hornady.
I really was trying to find a 222 rem Mag when I bought it.
I finally bought a SS Remage barrel that I put on a 1966 700 action. Still working on loads but I’ve had some .3 groups with it.
My latest update. I had two one hole groups at 100 yards yesterday using H335 26.5 gr and .015″jump. The bullets were 50gr Hornady HPFB Varminator. The Varminator had a longer base to ogive than all the others I have used and allowed for a greater neck contact. I am really glad I selected my old favorites Remington 700
in 222 RM
