California Considers Law Requiring Permits for Ammo Purchases
After politicians force citizens to register their firearms, what comes next? Laws requiring permits to purchase ammo (with mandatory registration and finger-printing). We kid you not. Right now in California (no surprise), legislators are considering legislation (Senate Bill 53) that would require purchasers of ammunition to register with the state Department of Justice (DOJ) prior to purchasing any ammunition, and to obtain an ammo-purchasing permit.
You would think such a law would be rejected as an extreme “prior restraint” and hence, a violation of Californians’ Constitutional rights. But heck no, quite a few politicians (you guess the party) believe that it is perfectly fine to require pre-purchase registration of ammo buyers. Last week, anti-gun Senate Bill 53 passed in the California Assembly Public Safety Committee by a 5 to 2 vote. SB 53 will now go to the Assembly floor where it could be considered at anytime.

SB 53 would require ammo buyers to register with the state Department of Justice (DOJ) prior to purchasing any ammunition. The registration process would require the submission of fingerprints, background check results, and fees to the DOJ. On top of that, SB 53 would require gun owners to obtain a costly ammunition purchaser permit every two years. In addition, at time of sale, ammo purchasers would have to provide a thumbprint for all ammunition purchases.
It Gets Worse — California Legislation Would Also Ban Mail-Order Ammo Sales
This onerous legislation, SB53, does more than mandate registration of ammo purchasers. It would also ban online and mail-order sales of all ammunition, including hunting ammunition.

I can hear the reloading kits being ordered now.
Try powder and primers.
California must be an incredible place to live. Despite seemingly endless encroachments on personal rights, massive cost of living and a bankrupt state government, people still choose to live there. I’ve gotta be missing something.
I wonder if Berger will relocate due to new California legislation, similar to Magpul relocating after Colorado passed restrictive legislation?
During my career search, I only considered states that have a strong history sporting firearm freedom. California did have a dream engineering company for me, but most of my firearm collection would be illegal. No thanks.
Boy that will really make a difference in the crime rate! I can hear it now, “Gang related gun violence” is down 85%. S/o. It is another liberal law design to cause pain to the law abiding citzen. Period
I recall, years ago, having to sign a log when purchasing ammo in California. I believe that was dropped when someone figured out it had never accomplished anything. Accomplishing anything does not appear to be a requirement there now.
Please note the article title, “Considers…”. This legislation has passed in the CA Senate but has NOT yet been voted on in the CA Assembly. Current status is waiting third reading. See status at http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201320140SB53&search_keywords=
If passed then the Governor needs to sign off or veto. At the moment he is not prepared to do anything until a pending court case is settled. It could be vetoed if the case is not settled before the Governor’s action is required – forcing it to be resubmitted.
Both the NRA and the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) – and several interested parties – have been pushing CA voters to call and e-mail their legislators to kill this WPOStuff.
IF you are a CA voter and have NOT yet made your voice heard, it needs to be done NOW! Including contacting the Governor.
I am sooooo glad I left that state.
It’s amazing that there are any gun or ammunition related manufacturers left in CA. I wouldn’t give them a dime of tax $$$.
Contact the Governor? He is going to pass that bill the second it hits his desk. Has a stamp of his signature just for gun control legislation.
We ran out of crappy Governors, now we are bring back re-treading them.
This is a regressive law that will hurt low income gun owners the hardest since it will restrict ammo supplies to only the local brick and mortar stores which will have no competition, thus we can expect substantial price increases.
Glad many in CA are standing and fighting rather then just leaving. These battles are important for the whole country as eventually it will become a national issue.
Just what does the Constitution mean to the asshats in Cali???? If “gun control” really worked then Cali, Chicago, New York, and DC would be the safest places on the planet!
Looks like Cali govt is really only interested in “people control.”
You live in a state of loons already. Move or get on the net and buy, buy, buy! Really don’t feel bad for a state of idiots and morons like Tuna Pelosipiss, Barbara Boxless, Diane Frankstein one scary witch. Your chickens have all come home to roost!!
i would feel much safer if the bad guys got their ammo at wal mart, rather then through my bedroom window.
