MidwayUSA Launches Updated, Redesigned Website
MidwayUSA just launched its re-designed website. We think most of the changes are for the good. First, the search function is simpler and faster (though a bit hard to see as the search field is the same color as the background). We typed in “Lapua 6mmBR” and instantly found the Lapua 6mmBR brass we wanted.
You’ll find handy Quick Links at the bottom middle of the home page. These simple hyperlinks allow you to quickly navigate to particular product types, such as “Bullets”, “Bipods”, “Reloading Dies”, and “Rifle Scopes”. We also like the way general product categories can be accessed via a horizontal menu at the top. Just under the MidwayUSA logo you’ll find tabs for “Shooting”, “Reloading”, “Gunsmithing”, Hunting”, “Optics”, and “Ammunition”. There’s also a red “Clearance” tab that provides one-click access to some of the best bargains on the site.
Weekly and Monthly Specials are found on the left, below the “Featured Promotions”. We recommend you check the Weekly Specials regularly. Rather than poor-selling clearance items, Weekly Specials are often very popular products that have been temporarily discounted 15-20% in price. For example, this week, Wipe-Out Foam Bore Cleaner is on sale at $8.49, marked down from $9.99 (a 15% savings).

New website looks OK, still very slow and I have a FIOS fiber connection to the net. If it was a site I ran, I would have spent the time on the servers and connection or moved the site to a mainstream farm that can handle the bandwith. No real improvement on the user end.
Unfortunately, MidwayUSA’s site still runs on .NET.
I don’t think .NET is the problem. In fact, I make my living converting crappy PHP sites over to .NET and SQL Server and my customers are always happier with it. However, whatever Midway is doing with their hosting servers or the way they structure their applications doesn’t make good use of the technology. Based on how difficult their interface still is to use vs. finding something at Bruno’s, Widener’s or Brownell’s sites, it’s a good indication that they don’t know what they’re doing. (At least they finally got my Nosler 165gr Accubond order out the door. Those are getting hard to find). I did a search on these and got no results back. While I didn’t do a search on Bruno’s, Midsouth or Powder Valley, all those were faster and easier to navigate to that bullet. Granted, they sell less variety of stuff, but still, once you click on bullets it shouldn’t take that long to get to where you want.
I think the design of the site looks good. I konw from use that their website takes time to learn how to operate and is sensitive to spelling and where things are located at when you are searching. I tried to search for “Nosler 165gr Accubonds” like Jon and didnt find anything at first. When I seperated “165gr” to “165 gr” I got 7 results back. It is little things like that that take time to figure out. Once you do their site is easy to navigate just still very slow. But it is a little faster than what it use to be.
