The September digital edition of Shooting Sports USA magazine (SSUSA) features an Expert Forum on Wind Shooting. This outstanding article on wind reading starts off with a section by Bryan Litz, ace Palma shooter, and author of Applied Ballistics for Long-Range Shooting. Then five of the greatest American shooters in history share their personal wind wisdom. Lanny Basham (Olympic Gold Medalist, author, Winning in the Wind), Nancy Tompkins (Past National HP Champion, author, Prone and Long-Range Rifle Shooting), David Tubb (11-Time Camp Perry National Champion), and Lones Wigger (Olympic Hall of Fame) all offer practical wind-reading lessons learned during their shooting careers.
Whether you shoot paper at Perry or prairie dogs in the Dakotas, this is a certified “must-read” resource on reading the wind. Here is a sample selection from the article:
You can sign up online to receive FREE digital editions of Shooting Sports USA every month. In addition to feature stories such as the wind-reading article, each monthly edition provides a comprehensive schedule of shooting events nationwide. CLICK HERE to SUBSCRIBE.

With the increased activity in our AccurateShooter.com Forum, which now boasts nearly 11,300 members, we’ve added a new category for optics in our FREE Classifieds. Previously, ads for optics, sights, rings etc. were included in our miscellaneous category. The new optics Classifieds category can be used for sale, trade, and WTB listings for rifle scopes, sights, spotting scopes, red dot sights, laser rangefinders (LRFs), rings, bases, scope rails, scope level devices, target-cams, and all optics/sighting accessories. Our Forum Classifieds are very effective. Good products, at a fair price, sell fast.
Feedback System for Forum Classifieds Buyers and Sellers
With all our Classifieds categories, ads are free to registered Forum members*. For regular individual (non-business) members, there are no fees to advertise a product, and no fees on sales. To provide assurance to buyers and sellers, we have a Feedback System. When browsing ad postings, click the Trade Count number after a member’s name to read feedback on that user’s previous performance as both buyer and seller.
If you do decide to list an item for sale, we strongly recommend you include photos of the product. CLICK HERE for step-by-step instructions that show you how to include photos in your advert.
*Free Forum Classifieds are for individual members, for their personal, non-business use. Businesses may place classifieds, but only if they are supporting sponsors or active advertisers with the site.

We’ve learned that many first-time visitors to AccurateShooter.com may come in via a link to the Daily Bulletin rather than through our home page. As a result, they may not be aware that there is a wealth of other content available to our readers. Our Shooters’ Forum, with nearly 11,000 registered members, is one of the best places on the web to discuss precision shooting and advanced reloading. We also offer FREE Forum Classifieds. On the editorial side, AccurateShooter.com offers hundreds of pages of content, with thousands of photos. Our Cartridge Guides are considered definitive sources of tech info for popular match calibers, and our Guns of the Week articles provide in-depth reports on outstanding custom rifles, most of which have competition pedigrees. In addition, we offer videos, gear reviews, book reviews, an event calendar, and even FREE downloadable targets.
If you’re a new visitor to AccurateShooter.com, you should check out all that we have to offer. There are hundreds of informative articles to read … and they’re all free.
We have a very active FREE Classifieds section in our Shooters’ Forum. Our Classifieds are currently grouped into two (2) basic categories: 1) Guns, Actions, Stocks, and Barrels; and 2) Tools, Dies, Optics & Miscellaneous. As our Forum has grown, so have the number of Classified listings. Some Forum members want us to create more Classifieds categories, so it will be easier to locate specific items, such as barrels or brass. Many other readers like the system just the way it is, since they can find a wide variety of items all in one place.
We want your opinion on the subject. Should we create more Forum Classifieds Categories? And should we include a paid section for Commercial listings? That way retail vendors could list new products, special bargains, or group buy offers. Express your views in the Poll below (you can pick more than one answer). If you have specific suggestions, post them in this Forum Classifieds Update Topic.

First, we’d like to wish all our readers a happy, safe, and prosperous New Year. We hope that, in 2010, you’ll have time to enjoy your precision rifles, and spend more time at the range, hopefully with good friends who share your “addiction to accuracy”.

2009 was a big year for the site. AccurateShooter.com is now being accessed by more than 60,000 users every week. This fall we completed a major upgrade, moving our Shooters’ Forum to a new dedicated server that is faster and more reliable. Our Forum is approaching 10,000 members and the Forum Classifieds section, with a new seller/buyer feedback system, is more active than ever. Likewise our Daily Bulletin has become hugely popular, drawing readers from around the globe. 365 days a year we offer a unique combination of shooting tips, gear reviews, industry news, and highlighted bargains and special sales. On the editorial side we’ve continued to publish in-depth profiles of interesting firearms, along with technical articles, and feature stories on leading shooters such as World F-TR Champion Russell Simmonds.
In the months ahead we plan to release more Cartridge Guides, plus major comparison tests on Chronographs, High-Magnification Scopes, and Rangefinders. And we’ll continue to offer timely match reports and inside “scoops” on the latest precision shooting products.
But to do all that, we need your support. For some five years the site has relied largely on volunteer efforts by dedicated shooters. But as the site grows, adding new types of content and more sophisticated features, we need the assistance of knowledgeable programmers, database experts and web designers. Those guys don’t work for glory alone.
For the site to continue to expand its content, we need to bring in paid helpers. Right now, the site reaches over 60,000 shooters every WEEK. If the majority of those users could provide a small donation every year, we could deliver MORE stories, MORE tests, MORE Gun of the Week features, and provide more of the photos and videos everyone enjoys. (Yes commercial sponsors help greatly, but their contributions alone won’t do the job.)
In the past quarter a couple dozen guys have generously donated to the site. I want to again thank all those who have contributed. But that still leaves tens of thousands of users who access the site regularly without contributing.
Here’s my proposal. First, if you have used our FREE Classifieds to successfully sell your rifles or shooting gear, consider sending in a dollar or two from your sale proceeds. Second, for those who use the site regularly, consider donating One Dollar a Month. That’s less than the price of a cup of coffee and much less than many websites now charge for their “premium content areas”. Consider this — what do you pay for a movie ticket these days? Probably $8.00 or more for 90 minutes of escapism. For a buck a month you can help this site provide a YEAR’s worth of info, tests, and shooting news that you won’t find anywhere else.
Making a donation to the site is simple and easy. Just scoll down to the bottom of this page and click the DONATE Button to make a donation. If you have a credit card, you don’t need a Paypal account to contribute. Any sum is welcome — donations need not be large. If 20% of our readers gave even $5.00 a year we could hire a staffer to do research, create videos, and help with field tests.
If you don’t like Paypal, you can send a check. Make the check payable to our Asst. Editor Jason Baney, list your Forum Name (if any), and mail the check to:

Looking for a great deal on a “previously-owned” precision rifle? Maybe you’re shopping for a stock for your next tactical or varmint rifle project? Or perhaps you have some reloading components to sell, or tools and dies that you don’t need anymore. Then check out the Classified Ads section in our AccurateShooter Forum. Buyers will find many great deals, and sellers can often sell their item(s) the first day (if the price is right and the photos are good). What’s the best thing about our Classifieds? Basic forum ads are 100% free to both buyers and sellers. And we’ll even host your photos for free — just attach images (150kb or smaller) to your Forum advert.
Feedback System Implemented in Forum
New to the Forum is our Buyer/Seller Feedback System. Both buyers and sellers can provide feedback on completed transactions. When you’re shopping look for a “Trade Count” number below the seller’s Forum user name. Click on that number to see the feedback that person has received. Feedback can also be left for buyers, and we do recommend that sellers “put in a good word” for buyers who pay promptly and provide good communication.
High Quality Guns and Gear
There have been some VERY nice rifles sold through our classifieds. It’s not unusual to find a full custom with less than 500 rounds selling for hundreds less than the build cost. If you’re on a tight budget, watch the Classifieds regularly — you can often save big bucks on really nice rigs. Shown below is a nice 6-6.5×47 long-range rifle currently for sale on the Forum. The gun features a Stolle Panda F-Class RB/RP Stainless action with 20 MOA built-in elevation. The stock is a nicely bedded fiberglass McMillan MBR. The 8-twist barrel is a 30″ Shilen SS Select Match barrel with just under 600 rounds. The gun’s a shooter, and a set of Hornady custom dies plus some brass will be included….

In our Shooters’ Forum, member David C. posted this account about David’s recent positive experience with John Pierce of Pierce Engineering. It’s nice when a good deed gets acknowledged. Dave wrote:
“I don’t know if you guys know or have heard of John Pierce, but he makes a fine action and custom rifles if you want one. Well his shop is only about 5 miles from me so I went to see him yesterday. I had bought a Stevens .243 with the idea of making a 6mmBR out of it. I had it apart and had cut 0.600″ off and put the same amount of threads on it. I just wanted [John] to ream it for me if he had the time.
Well, John took one look down the barrel with his borescope and said ‘It’s Junk’. He then went through his take-off barrels and found a nice stainless bull barrel and said ‘this will work’. He then crowned it, cut it off and threaded it with a shoulder so no Savage nut was required. He then reamed it and put it all back together and checked the head space.
If that wasn’t enough, John then loaded 15 cases for me, gave me 100 primers and showed me around his shop. Now mind you I had been there most of the morning. Let me tell you, this guy has his stuff together. Boy does he make a great action. I said, ‘Well how much do I owe you?’, and he said ‘Nothing… just go shoot it and have some fun’.
I did buy him lunch, LOL. Guess where I will be getting my next rifle? Thanks John, you sure made this old man’s day.” – Dave C.

This week we activated our new, enhanced Shooters’ Forum. The Forum has been re-installed with speedier software on a fast, dedicated server. If you haven’t visited our Forum yet, you should check it out. Users have been very pleased. Brand 962 says: “Fantastic upgrades. Well worth the wait.” Mike (aka Pdog06) reports: “The Forum is way faster on my end than before. I also like the fact that there are now timestamps on posts and PMs, which can help out in the classifieds when you get multiple ‘I’ll take it’ responses.”
How to Log In to the New Forum
If you were registered in our Forum before, you can use the SAME User Name and SAME Password on the new Forum. However, on your first visit to the New Forum you’ll need to log-in TWO TIMES in a row to activate your account. The first log-in captures your name and password, and encrypts the info for higher security. The second log-in will activate your account. Thankfully, most people have figured this out. Note that your password is CASE SENSITIVE now. So, if it was all lower case before, you need to type it exactly that way.
Forum Attachments Now Working
When we launched this new Forum we imported over 3500 file attachments (mostly pictures), from the old Forum. That was a very difficult task and we had a few glitches. Now all the attachments are linked up successfully so the attachment feature is live and “open for business”. To attach files to a post you can either upload your image to an image host (such as Photobucket.com) then simply paste the code for the picture into your post. We recommend using a third-party image host for photos, as this will display your pictures full size (or any size you set during upload).
But, if you prefer, you can also upload your images as attachments. Your files will then be stored on our server. To upload image attachments, click on the “Additional Options” link below the text box. This will display the attachments option. Click “Choose” to find a file on your computer hard-drive. NOTE: Max file size for an attached file is 150kb so you may have to re-size your images before loading.
Once you’ve designated a file attachment, you can add more attachments the same way if you want. Then, when all the attachments are listed, click POST. Your files will be uploaded to our server and will appear in the post as 180-pixel thumbnails. Click on the thumbnail to see the full-size image.

The CMP recently launched a new, upgraded CMP Online Forum that’s faster and easier to navigate. The New Forum features 18 categories, covering CMP Sales, Auctions, and CMP events. There are separate sub-boards for Bolt-Action Rifles, M1 Carbines, M1 Garands, and Smallbore rifles. At the top of the new CMP Forum you’ll find links for Competition, Rifle Tech Info, and Sales. NOTE: Even if you were a member of the CMP’s Old Forum, you must re-register on the new site. The Old Forum will remain online for a few months, though it is now closed to new posts.
The newly updated forum also has a marketplace area (for parts trading), and a calendar section where readers can post info about Regional matches and events. Collectors should watch the Auctions category for advanced notice of items to be auctioned on the CMP’s online Auction Site.

Today we activated the new FORUM for AccurateShooter.com. The new Forum includes all the info from the original Forum, including photos and attachments. Our new FORUM uses a new dedicated server for faster page display and quicker searches. In addition, the new software provides many new (and often-requested) features, such as direct feedback for members who buy and sell via our classifieds.
Same Names and Same Passwords Will Work
If you were already a member of our Shooters’ Forum, you can log-in with the SAME User Name and SAME password as before. However, the first time you log in to the new Forum, you may have to enter name and password two times in a row. (The first input installs and encrypts your password; when you enter name + password a second time, the server “sees” the password and logs in your account).
The new forum replicates ALL the threads and posts from the existing forum, so the new FORUM will have all the information accumulated in the last five years. This includes tons of valuable load data and reloading information. You can also see thousands of images in our new FORUM. And we even retained all the private messages, so you won’t lose any info found there.
Some Attachment Issues Remain
In moving from the old server to the new FORUM server, we had to parse and move over 3500 attachments. This was a very difficult task and there are some technical issues that remain to be resolved. When you access your personal profile on the new FORUM, you may see a file that you attached to an old post. Don’t wory about that… we’re working on a fix. Likewise, some members may see an old attachment at the top of the FORUM front page, but we think we’ve got that resolved.
When creating a new thread (topic), or replying to a post, you can still attach a digital image stored on a third-party hosting site such as PhotoBucket.com or ImageCave.com. And, while our attachment system is up and running, we request that you do not use the attachment feature yet to attach new files. Please upload your photos to a 3rd party host instead… for a few more days. This way if we have to re-format the attachments, your file(s) won’t be lost.
