Midsouth Shooters Supply has recently added Berger Bullets to its inventory. Midsouth’s representative informed us that: “Finally after about 4 years of discussion, [Midsouth has] picked up Berger Bullets. Our prices are very competitive. We actually based our final decision after reading some of the 6mmBR articles and looking in your forum and seeing how many of your shooters prefer Berger.” We applaud this move by Midsouth. This should give our readers a new affordable source for Berger match and hunting bullets.
Also check out Midsouth’s Fall “E-Flyer”. There are many good deals, including a handsome, khaki shooting cap for just $2.99 (with purchase of other items). Act soon though–the last batch of these promo hats sold out quickly.

It’s hunting season, and we expect many of you will be bringing home deer meat for the table. Peterson’s Hunting magazine offers four popular venison recipes that will turn your “fruit of the hunt” into a gourmet meal. Our favorite is the Southwestern Venison Roast cooked dutch-oven style.
Our love for venison is long-standing, according to author Cherie Eby: “In fact, long before chicken, beef, pork and lamb came to define meat, venison was the most readily available source of protein around. And for 50,000 years we’ve been dining on it in one form or another.”
Two dozen other wild game recipes, including Elk Roast, Jagerschnitzel, and Garlic Duck, are found on Hunting’s “Cook Shack” page. If you want to cook venison like a pro, check out “The Art of Cooking Venison” by Executive Chef Albert Wusch (Cache Creek Enterprises). This $12.00 book contains 50 easy-to-prepare recipes, and covers everything from field-dressing deer to professional cooking tips. Here are some of Chef Wusch’s recipes:

Stuffed Loin of Venison with Spinach and Fennel
Rack of Venison with Roasted Garlic and Sundried Tomato
Venison Chops with Gorgonzola Wrapped in Phyllo
Loin of Venison with Brandy Cream and Green Peppercorns
Roast Leg of Venison with Garlic and Rosemary
Venison Medallions with Green Peppercorn Sauce |

In our view, the 6.5×47 Lapua cartridge is a bit low on capacity to shoot the full-size 139-142gr 6.5mm bullets at optimal velocities. However, the round really performs with 120-130gr match projectiles. Don Nielson once again demonstrated the accuracy potential of the 6.5×47 at a recent Sacramento 600-yard NBRSA match. Don “cleaned house” in Heavy Gun class, winning HG Aggregate, and HG Score (283-3X), the latter a new record. Don was shooting the JLK 130gr VLD, produced by Swampworks based on an original Jimmy Knox design. The JLK 130 may be the “ultimate” bullet choice for the 6.5×47 case–with just the right combination of weight, bearing surface, and BC. The 6.5mm 130gr VLD, item 26130, costs $43.60 per 150. Specs are listed on the Swampworks website. To order call (417) 831-2309.

Some months ago we featured Gary Eliseo’s superb R5 Repeater Rifle Kit chambered in 6BR. Many of the folks who shoot prone centerfire matches also practice and compete with rimfire rifles. Gary has created a high-quality tubegun kit for smallbore shooters. This kit provides a great platform for NRA prone shooters who want to cross-train with a rimfire gun. The kit utilizes the outstanding Anschütz 54 match action and Anschütz trigger group. Gary’s AN1 kit uses a unique barrel sleeve mounting system that free floats both the action and barrel resulting in zero stress mounting for enhanced accuracy. Optional extras include a front sight base (see below) and a very effective barrel tuner. Visit CompetitionShootingStuff.com for more info, or call Gary Eliseo at (714) 630-5734, M-F 9am to 4pm, Pacific Time.
Gary also fabricates his own custom, adjustable sight bases for space guns, tube guns, and Tubb 2000s. This allows you to use the front sight of your choice.

Forum member Hammer47 (Gary R.) has acquired a large inventory of 3″-forearm, older model Kelbly benchrest stocks with a radius on the bottom of the buttstock. Apart from color and the radius, these are otherwise identical to current Kelbly stocks which feature a 1/2″ flat on the buttstock’s toe. Gary explains: “[I’ve] bought all of the inventory of the BR stocks with the older style ’rounded’-bottom buttstock. The new stocks are the same except that the bottom of the rear of the stock is flattened by one half inch. These are 100 percent stocks, not seconds, just the older style. [I] will sell these for $250 SHIPPED to your USA address. Have both RB/LP and LB/RP. These stocks are flat black and will need slight sanding to remove the mold separation marks and a shot of flat black paint or a custom paint job if you are so inclined.” The stocks are all inletted for Stolle Panda actions, but this will also fit Stiller Viper/Python, and the inletting can be modified for some other custom actions.
This is a good deal if you’re looking for a high-quality yet inexpensive stock for your next BR or Varmint rifle. Click HERE for more information, or contact Bubbagun [at] hotmail.com.

Hunters are a very important force in land and wildlife conservation. A National Geographic feature article, Hunters: For the Love of the Land, demonstrates how hunters help preserve wildlife and open lands: “[T]he nation’s 12.5 million hunters have become essential partners in wildlife management. They have paid more than 700 million dollars for duck stamps, which have added 5.2 million acres to the National Wildlife Refuge System since 1934, when the first stamps were issued. They pay millions of dollars for licenses, tags, and permits each year, which helps finance state game agencies. They contribute more than 250 million dollars annually in excise taxes on guns, ammunition, and other equipment, which largely pays for new public game lands. Hunters in the private sector also play a growing role in conserving wildlife.”
This 8-page article, written by hunter Robert M. Poole, is well worth a read. Poole raises many intriguing points. Poole suggests that hunting is an important part of our heritage: “[H]umans are still programmed for the chase, since our species has been doing that far longer than we have been farming, writing poetry, or marketing stuff by telephone at dinnertime.” But Poole also observes that “In recent decades, the number of hunters has been dropping. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, there were 14.1 million hunters in 1991, 13 million in 2001, and 12.5 million in 2006, which means that they now make up a mere 5 percent of the adult population. Younger hunters are entering the field but not in sufficient number to replace the old ones[.]” Poole’s article suggests that it is time we re-double our efforts to involve more young people in hunting and the shooting sports.

Our most recent Gun of the Week was a 6.5×47 Lapua Tactical Rifle built with a Surgeon Action, Krieger Barrel, and McMillan stock. Built for Rob Hunter to use in a European Military and Sniper Competition in the Czech Republic, this rifle proved it’s mettle in its first-ever competition. Vince Bottomley, who smithed the rifle, reports: “Just to let you know… with his ‘Britactical’ rifle, Rob finished a magnificent third in Czechoslovalia–out of thirty-odd shooters. Not bad for a brand new rifle and cartridge.” Well, done, Robert! We are pleased to see how a gun evolves successfully through concept, building, and finally, performance in the field. This shows that, if you endow a rifle with the best components, such as the U.S. Optics 5-25×58 SN3 scope shown here, good things can happen.

Now through November 30, 2007, MidwayUSA has the F1 Master Chronograph (Item #688064) on sale for just $79.99. That’s $24.00 off the regular price. This unit includes the remote screen. All components (other than diffuser screens and screen supports), fold up into the hinged case for easy transport. NOTE: the F1 Master has a remote display, but this is NOT a full-featured remote control. You won’t be able to edit strings or switch between functions from the bench (only the more expensive models of Shooting Chronys allow that.) Just bring a pencil and pad to record your shots.
Is this worth buying? We’ll be honest, Shooting Chronys can be finicky in very strong sunlight and when the light comes from a harsh angle. They usually work best with hazy mid-morning light. Function-wise, this is a pretty “bare bones” unit. However, the Shooting Chrony design is very compact and easy to set-up. We keep an older Shooting Chrony in the car at all times as a “spare”. It can be put “into action” in under 5 minutes (using an inexpensive tripod with quick-release mount). At a cost of $79.99 you can almost afford to have a Shooting Chrony F1 Master as a “back-up” device–and one to use with hand-guns. If, heaven forbid, you hit the device, it’s nice to know it didn’t cost much.

Sierra surprised many by announcing a completely NEW 135-grain HPBT MatchKing in 30 caliber (.308 diameter). The new bullet is part of Sierra’s 2008 line-up, so expect the 135-grainer to be at vendors around mid-December 2007 (at the earliest). Sierra tells us: “This bullet was designed to fill the need for a lighter-weight / low recoil 30-caliber bullet for smaller-capacity cartridges. Sierra expects this bullet to be a popular choice for our across the course, handgun silhouette and 100-200 yard benchrest customers.” Hmmm, 100-200 BR? The bullet’s a bit heavy for the 30BR but it might prove effective for club-level “factory class” competition with .308 rifles. The bullet should also work well for Garand Matches.
The new 135gr SMKs will be available in boxes of 100 bullets (stock #2123) with MSRP of $35.30 per box or in boxes of 500 bullets (stock #2123C) with MSRP of $164.49 per box. We expect the 100-count boxes to cost about $25-$26, based on current “street price” for 150gr HPBT MatchKings.

The Redding Case Neck Gauge is one of the better tools on the market for measuring neck-wall thickness. It works quickly and is both repeatable and accurate. When turned and unturned necks were checked first on the Redding tool and then double-checked with a Starrett ball mic, the results were the same–but of course the task can be completed much faster with the Redding gauge or similar tool.
Neck-wall thickness gauges are not just for folks who turn necks. For best accuracy, you want cases that have the same neck-wall thickness so you maintain consistent neck tension case to case. Likewise you want to eliminate cases with necks that are much thicker on one side than another. Even if you shoot “no-turn” necks, this tool lets you efficiently sort cases by neck-wall thickness and uniformity. That can dramatically improve accuracy.
The Redding Case-Neck Gauge comes complete with a .001″ Dial Indicator and two pilots (.22 and .30 caliber). With a MSRP of $96.00, this unit typically sells for $78 to $84.00. Right now, Midsouth Shooter’s Supply has the Redding Case-Neck Guage, item 076-26400, on sale for just $56.88, including two mandrels and both .22 and .30 caliber pilots. If you shoot a 6mm, 6.5mm, or 7mm, you’ll need to purchase a separate pilot for $4.09. CLICK HERE for a web brochure with more details.
