Dick’s Sporting Goods Stops Selling ARs and Raises Purchase Age
Dick’s Sporting Goods, a major sporting goods retail chain, will stop selling AR-platform rifles, and require a minimum age of 21 years to purchase ANY and all firearms, not just handguns. In addition, the company will stop selling “high-capacity magazines”. The Chairman/CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods, Edward W. Stack, announced these new policies yesterday (2/27/2018), while appearing on the Good Morning America TV show. Stack said the ban would begin immediately, with ARs and other mag-fed semi-automatic rifles being removed from all Dick’s stores (and deleted from the company’s website).
The action was prompted by the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Stack stated: “As we looked at what happened in Parkland, we were so disturbed and saddened by what happened we felt we really needed to do something. When that happened we realized … we did everything by the book. We did everything that the law required, and he was still able to buy a gun. And when we looked at that, we said the systems that are in place across the board just aren’t effective enough to keep us from selling someone a gun like that.” Notably, Stack revealed that Nikolas Cruz, the Florida school shooter, had purchased a shotgun from Dick’s last year (however, that shotgun was NOT used in the shooting).
Dick’s Sporting Goods will no longer sell AR-platform rifles and other similar, semi-auto, mag-fed rifles. It is unclear if other, more traditional semi-auto centerfire rifles will still be sold.
Stack also urged elected officials to enact “common sense gun reform” by banning “assault-style” firearms (his terminology, not ours); raising the minimum age to purchase all firearms to 21; banning high-capacity magazines; banning bump stocks; and requiring more complete universal background checks that include relevant mental health information and previous interactions with law enforcement. Stack also hopes that a universal database of those banned from buying firearms is created, and that private sales without background checks are disallowed. (Source: IndyStar.com)
Previously, in late 2012, Dick’s removed semi-auto AR/AK-type rifles from its main retail stores in response to the school shooting at Sandy Hook. However, after a few months, sales of ARs and similar rifles resumed at Field & Stream stores operated by Dick’s.
There will be no going back this time, Stack said, emphasizing that the policy changes will be permanent. In an open letter, Stack announced: “We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens. But we have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us.”

Here in Cali we have all the proposed laws like Dick’s honcho supports. Crime is rampant throughout Cali, especially in areas with no gun shops like SF. Even SoCal/LA is overrun by crime but legislation that comes out of Sacramento’s Democrat controlled headquarters never address’s the real criminals. Jerry Brown gives actual illegal’s drivers licenses, reduces sentences for criminals letting them out early and redefines crimes to have less impact on the criminal. The real problem nationwide is that democrats are the lowest form of political species and will do whatever it takes to get re-elected even if that means not addressing the mental health issues inundating our nation.
This is just more extreme than their last reaction to a “tragic” event. Instead of hiding the guns they are insulting the intelligence of adults by raising the age of sale and then running away like screaming little girls from inanimate objects.
no more business with this company …tired of every liberal blaming guns ….not the people …people are to blame
Mental health background checks are a slippery slope! Now we’re opening up medical records to the fed… hmm HIPAA anyone?
“mental health information”, now there is the slippery slope of slippery slopes. Tell your doc that you have been depressed about the loss of a family member, loss of your job, or a divorce and you are now on the list. Be warned!
Exactly. HIPAA should not be tampered with. The FBI literally knew of the threats… what we need to do is actively investigate someone who makes threats such as these!
It’s like saying the B word at an airport!
Since they are doing this in reaction to a perceived public outcry about objects instead of the users of such, I guess that I don’t really have a reason to shop at Dicks anymore. Their prices were never that good, and real sporting goods stores have a much better selection. Even a farm store like Rural King has better deals on ammo and arms. And I don’t play golf or run, as they both seem like a waste of time to me.
Hope this makes him feel better. The type of rifle had nothing to do with the liberal school board and county policies that led to this shooting or the fact a neighboring sheriff had to make the arrest because Broward County refused to get involved. I never have shopped at this inconsequential store nor would I ever consider it. But decisions like this make liberals more easily sleep at night knowing they did something – no matter how insignificant it was – even though the decision will have no affect on future events like this. Unfortunately dead children are but a biproduct of Agenda 21 programs, liberal school policies and law enforcement officials more interested in their jobs than their constituents.
Did you do your due diligence to see when the last time Dick’s Sporting Goods actually stocked AR’s? This is not new news. They want glory for NO reason.
Lori makes an excellent point.
Dicks stopped selling ARs after Sandy Hook.
Today they just ordered Field & Stream to stop as well.
Editor: That is explained in the article: “Previously, in late 2012, Dick’s removed semi-auto AR/AK-type rifles from its main retail stores in response to the school shooting at Sandy Hook. I expect Cabela’s was very happy to read this. There are two many other stores to spend my money with. Hopefully, all 4 million members of the NRA will take dick’s off of their shopping list as well.
Bye-Bye dick’s
Rich
Who cares what Dicks sells or Does not sell if your buying a gun in a place like that full of over priced junk,If you want sweaters and t-shirts and golf clothes yea go to dicks and pay thru the nose for some sweat shop crap made over seas,But if you want a fair price for a decent AR or other firearms go to a shop that specializes in firearm salesthat can tell you something about the weapon your buying is used do,s and donts with it not some storefront who just boxes it up takes your money and sends you home with it their part of the problem also.Buy your firearms is a professional setting,We can let dicks continue to sell things they specialize in Golf shirts and Tee shirts and maybe one day they will go from a free-standing sporting goods store to a Mall Clothing store like they pretty much are anyway. There a junk shop not a sporting goods place I have been in there twice I can think of like one thing I’ve bought there in the 20 or so years Dicks has been open here there are much better places to buy sporting goods. They will be shutting their doors in the next 5 years in the south.
Dick’s is a poor excuse for a sporting goods store . I use to work for Gaylans when they took them over . They ruined that store and did away with handguns . They don’t get none of my money never will .
I’ve never bought from Dick’s because they’ve never been gun customer friendly or knowledgeable in their gun department, so I will not be buying from them period.
Further follow-up to this story from a friend of mine: “Edward W. Stack, the CEO of the family business, Dick’s Sporting Goods…In making his extraordinary announcement this morning to as wide an audience as possible on ABC’s Good Morning America show,
Stack claimed that in November of last year, a Dick’s store sold a shotgun to Nikolas Cruz! Claiming that Dick’s didn’t want to
be a part of this story, he was making the announcement that the chain would not sell any firearms to anyone under 21 years
of age….”
Looks like damage control to me.
No loss in my opinion. Just another Wal-M–t with a different name.
Corporate cowardice.
Dicks stock went from 62 to 24 in a year, they are in trouble. Good.

just like ppl have rights to own guns, ppl also have rights to be stupid & mental ill.
it’s called freedom, can’t cry now…
Dick’s in my area have not had any AR type rifles in years. Not that I care, I will not do any business with Dick’s. Too many good companies to worry about stores like Dick’s.
Every time I went to Dick’s to purchase ammo they were out, so I stopped going. Not selling AR type rifles isn’t a problem to me as they probably don’t carry them anyway. They remind me of Sports Chalet which is now OOB. They may be a big chain, but so was Sports Chalet.
I hope readers of this article interpret this anti gun policy as justification to avoid shopping at Dicks!
Back when the Dems were trying to make AR’s illegal that created such a shortage of AR’s, Dicks canceled all orders on their books for AR’s. That threw a lot of people who had been waiting months and months back to the beginning of the line at another store. That was the last time I set foot in a Dicks, and I’ll never go back. Their decision on this is confirmation that I made the right decision.
We didn’t know this yesterday, but Wal-Mart announced it is now doing the same thing.
More surprisingly, the morning headline is that Trump calls for sweeping gun control legislation.
Every time this kind of attention is paid to the AR-15, magazine capacity limits, etc., their production and sales increase. These are American manufacturing plants and employees, benefitting.
I own up that, personally, shooting and collecting is dna encoded, but for those people who never gained a thing from guns or 2nd Amendment AND were unfortunate enough to be victimized by a criminal with a gun such as an AR-15, it’s a tough pill, granted.
However, 70 miles south of home, Mexico’s violence shows us what results from the lack of widely dispersed powerful weapons. For the same reasons concealed carry is largely successful as a deterrent to crime, or a quick end thereto, so is the common knowledge that many Americans are within 30 seconds or so of procuring their personally owned, crime-ending firearm. This fact may not deter a suicidal shooter but most criminals aren’t suicidal, and there is no doubt that widespread gun ownership has saved untold lives.
I would guess that the majority of the real gun owning public saw Dick’s for what it really is a very long time ago . Like the saying goes ; if you see something , say something ……Call every company that has joined the NRA Boycott , and tell them you won’t be spending any more of your red , white , and blue gun-owning dollars in their businesses . If you own their stock , sell it . The only “Morals” companies like “Dick’s” has , is to it’s bottom line , as they pander to the current wave of anti-gun psychosis .
It’s time ; once again , to say something . To your state Reps , State Senators , Congressman , Senators , and any damned-body else who has a public office and is involved in policy and law-making .Clog their phone lines , for if we go quietly into the night , we will surely go quietly into the night . And it will become the beginning of the end for our 2A rights .
The left-wing , anti-gun fanatics are not going to quit . Ever . Until we are a totally dis-armed , socialist police state .
Dick’s can make whatever inventory decisions they desire. That’s a simple business decision based on what they believe is best for the company long-term. I have no beef with that per se. And I think most of us already identified the hypocrisy of the company in pretending to look principled by ceasing the selling of AR’s in their MAIN stores while continuing to sell them in the Field & Stream chain. It’s all a facade intended to create a false perception.
The curious thing is this move to limit rifle purchases to buyers aged 21 or older in locations that legally allow those items to be bought by anyone a8 or above. Now generally I’m 100% for companies to be able to set whatever policies they want. I’m fairly libertarian in that regard; however, if Dick’s is going to be PUSHING for NEW legislation, then they need to be forced to adhere to CURRENT legislation which states that any adult passing a background check can purchase a rifle.
If they as a store agree to selling those items, then they need to conform to the state law regarding buyers’ ages as well, otherwise it seems like it would become an issue of age discrimination to me. I know there are a couple of lawsuits filed against them already on these grounds. I ultimately hope they succeed, not because we need more litigation, but because if they are pushing for a new legislative standard for Americans, then they need to hold to those already in place.
