There is no SHOT Show in Las Vegas this year, but in its stead Brownells is presenting a NOT-Show featuring products from major manufacturers. In addition, on every day from January 18 through 22, 2021, Brownells has offered a PRIZE Giveaway.
Today, the final day of Brownells NOT-Show, Brownells features Stag Arms products. Along with .223 Rem ARs, Stag Arms offers AR-platform rifles in 6.5 Creedmoor (Stag 10 Marksman) and 6mm ARC (Stag 15 Covenant). Stag is one of the first manufacturers to offer complete 6mm ARC rifles.
In addition, Brownells’ tech team looks at the impressive new Area 419 Zero Turret Press (photo right). This press sets new standards for precision repeatability in a turret press.
A major unveiling today was the all-new, illuminated 1-8x24mm Match Precision Optic (MPO) from Brownells. This could become very popular with hunters because this compact scope offers a true 1-power for wide field of view, plus max 8 power to spot details at long range. This Japanese-made optic is on sale today for $799.99 complete with cantilevered AR mounting bracket.
On Thursday, January 21, 2021 the Brownells NOT-Show covered Hornady’s new line of RFID safes. These offer some very sophisticated features with fast-open technology.
If this were a normal year, our team would be reporting from SHOT Show in Las Vegas right now. But the COVID-19 Pandemic changed all that. There is no SHOT Show 2021. However, the organizers of SHOT Show have created a virtual gallery of new products, SHOT Show “On Demand”. We scanned through over 500 new products to create this selection of 14 “new and notable” products. There are new optics from March, Zeiss, Leica, and Athlon, new bullets from Berger, new rifles from Howa and Ruger, plus additional products for hunters and long range shooters.
1. Berger .25 Caliber Long Range Hybrid Target Bullet
Berger’s new .25 Caliber 135 grain Long Range Hybrid Target bullet is the latest projectile offering in the highly-anticipated Long Range Hybrid Target (LRHT) product line. The new .25 Cal LRHT boasts a high BC, jump-tolerant hybrid ogive profile that is Doppler Radar-verified with less than 1% BC variation.
The 25s are ideal for many of today’s PRS and NRL disciplines that reach out to 1,000 yards and beyond. They are tailored for cartridges such as the .25 Creedmoor, 25-06 Remington, along with several wildcat cartridges popular among competitive shooters. The 135s require 1:8″ twist or faster. Use Berger’s Twist Rate Calculator and determine the optimal twist rate.

2. March 1-10x24mm Dual Reticle Riflescope — FFP and SFP
The new March 1-10×24mm Shorty is a revolutionary compact scope. The innovative Dual Reticle design boasts the advantages of both First Focal Plane (FFP) and Second Focal Plane (SFP) reticles.
This scope has the convenience of a FFP reticle which scales precisely with changes of magnification. But the scope also boasts the usability of a SFP reticle with constant line thickness as the magnification changes. Placing the bright fiber dot in the Second Focal Plane ensures that the illuminated dot is effective across the entire magnification range.
This a great scope for hunters. It weighs just 17.8 ounces and is just 8.4 inches overall. With a true 1X power option, it can be used to scan rapidly with both eyes open. But with its 10-fold zoom ratio, it can also be used for long range shots requiring precision aiming. MSRP is $2750.00.
3. Kestrel 5700X Elite Weather Meter, Applied Ballistics + LiNK
The Kestrel 5700X Elite Weather Meter with Applied Ballistics and LiNK offers the accuracy and reliability as the industry “gold standard” 5700 Elite. With an upgraded processor that is more powerful and faster than the 5700 Elite, the 5700X provides quicker targeting data for extreme long-range targets. For security, the adjustable Bluetooth® Low Energy signal can be dialed from full power to off position to minimize Bluetooth® range detectability. MSRP is $849.00.

MSRP is $2399.00. This is an interesting rifle, but we think for the money we would look at a semi-custom. Get a nice barreled action and drop it in a good chassis stock.
Zeiss Sports Optics has just unveiled ZEISS DTI 3/35, its first thermal imaging camera specifically developed for hunting. The thermal imaging camera combines a high-resolution display with a balanced, ergonomic design. Thanks to the ErgoControl arrangement of the control buttons and the device’s specially-shaped design, the ZEISS DTI 3/35 is intuitive to use. The buttons are arranged so that they can be engaged quickly and accurately with gloved hands even when it is dark and cold. Even the high-precision manual zoom is designed work easily in the dark. This is one of the best new pistol accessories we’ve seen in the last decade. The Leupold DeltaPoint Micro is a capable Red Dot optic that mounts on the back of a pistol slide, fitting the normal rear sight slot. That’s very clever. This Micro is much smaller than a typical red dot sight, making this a viable option for a concealed carry pistol. That is a very big deal. You can aim considerably faster because you don’t need to worry about front/rear sight alignment. Plus the battery-powered Red Dot gives a gun owner the ability to aim effectively in dark conditions. Just put the 3 MOA Red Dot on your target.
DeltaPoint Micro Features:
Low Profile Design. Sits so low on the slide that it replicates the same sight plane of iron sights, making it more intuitive to use and more concealable. Fast and Easy to Mount. Mounts directly to rear dovetail — no need to have slide milled or altered. Circular Optic Ring. Acts like a ghost ring sight if the battery dies. Smart Shut-off. Built-in motion sensor shuts off Red Dot after 5 minutes of inactivity, preserving battery. Adjustable Brightness. The 3 MOA Dot has multiple brightness settings. Enclosed Diode. Placed inside the housing, the diode is protected from moisture, dirt, and debris. Lifetime Guarantee. Unlike most electro-optics products, the DeltaPoint Micro is guaranteed for life.
The DeltaPoint Micro is 2.25″ long and 1.25″ tall, while weighing just 1.1 ounces. It’s a direct replacement for the rear factory iron sight and mounts at the same height. Keeping the same height makes it easier for iron sight shooters to adjust to a new system. The Red Dot also aligns with the front sight, making target acquisition fast and intuitive.
Tim Lesser, Leupold’s V.P. of Product Development, is proud of the new DeltaPoint Micro: “No red dot on the market is more compact; its low height-to-bore replicates the same sight plane that iron-sight shooters are used to, allowing for intuitive target acquisition.”
CCW Holders are the “target market” for Leupold’s new, low-profile Red Dot product: “For shooters who need a red dot sight for their personal carry pistol, the DeltaPoint Micro is a rugged reflex sight that delivers rapid target acquisition, increased accuracy … in a sleek, low-profile design.” This is not an inexpensive accessory. The MSRP is $519.99 for either Glock or S&W versions.
Leupold currently produces DeltaPoint Micro optic models for Glock and Smith & Wesson M&P pistols, with more versions (for other guns) likely to be released later in 2021.
Real World Review from The Shooting Wire Shooting Wire Editor Jim Shepherd got a DeltaPoint Micro for testing, and quickly saw its potential: “I decided to mount [the DeltaPoint Micro] on my first-generation M&P Shield. The inability to put an optic on it had become a real problem. To the point it was resting in my safe, not riding in the holster where it accompanied me for several years. The problem wasn’t the Shield, it was my aging eyeballs. I can’t see the sights well enough to shoot [the M&P Shield] accurately.
Even without a lot of range time in on the DP-Micro equipped-Shield, I’ve shot it enough to realize I’m more accurate — and considerably faster — than with iron sights. No more ‘searching’ for a front sight. Now, I’m using dry-fire practice to ‘re-learn’ the Shield with this new optic.” READ FULL Report.
Burris Signature Rings with polymer inserts are an excellent product. The inserts allow you to clamp your scope securely without ring marks. Moreover, using the matched offset inserts you can “pre-load” your scope to add additional elevation. This helps keep the scope centered in its elevation range while shooting at long range. Additionally, with a -20 insert set in the front and a +20 insert set in the rear, you may be able to zero at very long ranges without using an angled scope base — and that can save money. (To move your point of impact upwards, you lower the front of the scope relative to the bore axis, while raising the rear of the scope.)
Insert Elevation Values and Ring Spacing
People are sometimes confused when they employ the Burris inserts. The inset numbers (-10, +10, -20, +20 etc.) refer to hundredths of inch shim values, rather than to MOA. And you need the correct, matched top/bottom pair of inserts to give you the marked thousandth value. Importantly, the actual amount of elevation you get with Burris inserts will depend BOTH on the insert value AND the spacing between ring centers.
Forum member Gunamonth has explained this in our Shooters’ Forum:
Working with Burris Signature Rings
Burris inserts are [marked] in thousandths of an inch, not MOA. To know how many MOA you gain you also need to know the ring spacing. For example, with a -20 thou insert set in the front and a +20 thou insert set in the rear, if the ring spacing is 6″, the elevation change will be approximately +24 MOA upwards.
Here’s how we calculate that. If you have a 2 X 0.020″ “lift” over a distance of 6 inches (i.e. 0.040″ total offset at 0.5 feet) that’s equivalent to 0.080″ “lift” over 12 inches (one foot). There are 300 feet in 100 yards so we multiply 0.080″ X 300 and get 24″ for the total elevation increase at 100 yard. (Note: One inch at 100 yards isn’t exactly a MOA but it’s fairly close.)
Here’s a formula, with all units in inches:
Total Ring Offset
——————– X 3600 = Change @ 100 yards
Ring Spacing
(.020 + .020)
—————– X 3600 = 24 inches at 100 yards
6
NOTE: Using the above formula, the only time the marked insert offset will equal the actual MOA shift is when the center to center ring spacing is 3.60″. Of course, you are not required to use 3.60″ spacing, but if you have a different spacing your elevation “lift” will be more or less than the values on the inserts.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could put up one BIG target that would handle a myriad of important tasks at the range: Zeroing, Load Development, Click Value Verification, and Click Tracking Repeatability Tests. Well the team at Box to Bench Precision (B2B) has developed what may be the most versatile (and biggest) precision targets ever developed. With ultra-accurate grid geometry, and razor-sharp printing, B2B’s targets set a new standard for target precision.
Click Tracking Grid Target The best procedure for checked the true value of your scope click values is to use a tall target that can dial in at least 25 MOA of “up”, and check where your cross-hairs air compared to exact pre-measured reference lins. B2B developed an advanced target just for that task. The 30″ tall by 23.5″ wide Rex Grid Target (shown below) provides a highly precise grid for testing elevation and windage clicks. The unique grid design has small tics denoting 1/4 MOA, 1/2 MOA, and 3/4 MOA. 1 MOA is marked with a “+” and the 5, 10, 15, 20, & 25 MOA elevation lines are bolded for better visibility. There are aiming points at 5 MOA intervals over the full grid.
This same target can also be used for “Box Tests” that verify click values and repeatability. with a box test you start in one corner with the initial shot (we recommend doing this with a warm barrel after a couple foulers). They you add “up” clicks to go straight up and take a second shot. Next add horizontal clicks to go across for the third shot. Then click down (the same number of cliks you went up) for the fourth shot. As a last step you reverse your horizontal clicks and take a fifth shot. If you have a good rifle and the scope clicks are repeatable, your fifth and final shot will be touching the first shot.
B2D’s Rex Grid Target can be used for Box Tests, as can B2B’s popularhttps://bit.ly/2BBe1jYLoad Development and Scope Tracking Target (left below) and B2B’s Sniper’s Hide 100-yard Target (right below).
B2B’s 100 Yard Long Range Load Development and Scope Tracking Target will perform many functions. This big, 30″ x 23.5″ target has specific aiming points for various tasks. In the upper left, there are 11 small orange circles for precision load testing. Over on the upper right are 7 more small, orange circles for doing a Seating Depth Comparison test.
The bottom half of the target has larger black-on-white circles that serve multiple functions. Use the corner circles to do a “Box Test” to confirm scope tracking. There’s another great feature on this target — running up the center of the target is a tall line that shows elevation in both MILs and MOA. That helps you confirm the TRUE click values of your optic. You’d be surprised how many scopes are slightly off — not exactly 1/4 MOA, 1/8 MOA, or 1/10 Mil as advertised. That’s why Long Range shooters absolutely need to verify their click values.
Buyers Praise the B2B Targets
We’ve handled the B2B Targets, which are printed on high-quality, tear-resistant card stock. We can attest the printing is very precise — with accurate elevation and windage values. These aren’t your ordinary targets — they are LARGE — nearly three feet tall. Verified buyers praise these targets:
“Thank you for talking to me about the MIL and MOA markers on your targets. They are very accurate. While using the Long Range 100-Yard Load Development/Scope Tracking target and my new scope, it helped me realize that my scope wasn’t tracking correctly (both turrets). So, I sent the scope to the manufacturer. When it came back, and using your target as my known constant… the scope is now ‘spot-on’ accurate. These targets are a great tool to gain a better understanding of your rifle, scope, turrets etc., all on one sheet.” — Stan, 2018
“Almost too nice to put holes in. I was in the printing industry for 35 years and these are really well done. Quality paper and precise printing … able to see bullet holes easily with these!” — Dan, 2018
