IWA Outdoor Classics Show in Nuremberg, Germany

IWA Outdoor Classics Show Germany

Our friend Vince Bottomley and the Target Shooter Magazine team from the UK is in Germany this week for the IWA Outdoor Classics trade show, aka “Euro SHOT Show”. The big IWA outdoor Expo opened Friday in Nuremberg, Germany. Oh his first day at IWA, Vince already found some interesting products.

CLICK HERE for Target Shooter Magazine Report from IWA Show in Nuremberg, Germany.

Here are a pair of German-engineered Turban reloading presses. Vince writes: “The [press] offered by Turban (Turban-cnc.de) is the ultimate. With this press you just wouldn’t want to stop reloading!” Turban makes presses for all sizes of cartridges. Look at the size of the die on the press on the right. Much like a Forster Co-Ax, the Turban’s priming system sends spent primers down a pipe to a cup.

Vince also discovered a very high-tech, ultra-light-weight F-TR bipod that is mostly carbon fiber. This looks like it belongs on a Formula 1 car. Vince says the Talon Mark 7 bipod is “super light and strong”. We like the arm design, but the feet need to be changed out. Those curved feet are like the Gen One SEB Joy-Pod feet. We’ve learned that flat, wide, ski-type feet work better — recoil is smoother with less hop. The longer, wider feet distribute rifle weight over a larger surface so you get less point-loading and less tendency to bounce with the energy pulse from each shot.

Three-Barrel BD14 ‘Bockdrilling’ from Blaser

Blaser BD14 Drilling Bockdrilling Shotgun Rifle
CLICK Photo for full-screen view.

If two barrels are better than one, then why not three? That’s the thinking behind the exotic new BD14 from Blaser, unveiled at the 2014 IWA Show in Germany. This “bockdrilling” three-barrel firearm works as a shotgun, large-caliber rifle, and small-caliber rifle all in one. Even with all those barrels, the BD14 is relatively light, at 3.3 kg (7.26 lbs) without optics. That makes this a nice, carry-around gun for stalking. As you’d expect from Blaser, the twin triggers are crisp and precise, with a pull weight of just 1.43 lbs (650 grams). The front trigger is for the large-caliber rifle barrel, while the rear trigger works both the shotgun and small-caliber barrels, via a tang-mounted selector. Sorry, we don’t yet have a USA-market price on this example of gun-making exotica, but you can bet it will be expensive.

Here’s what Blaser USA has to say about its unique three-barreled BD14:

“The ‘Bockdrilling’ is, put simply, an over/under (O/U) rifle-shotgun combination with a smaller caliber rifle-barrel… on the side. The barrel arrangement [allows] for an extremely slender receiver, making the BD 14 exceptionally huntable.

The brand new Vertical Block Lockup…has been filed for patent. It combines an extremely compact and solid block lockup in a closed system within the monoblock with the comfortable handling of a classic break-action rifle.

The double lock permits, if needed, a rapid second shot, the front trigger always releasing the large rifle-caliber. The … barrel selector actives the shotgun barrel when in position ‘top’ and activates the smaller rifle caliber in position ‘bottom’.”

New Products Revealed in Latest Target Shooter Magazine

The March edition of Target Shooter Magazine is now available. Content is free — you don’t have to purchase a subscription. This month there are many interesting featured articles, including a lengthy report from SHOT Show, and an article on tuning the 6 PPC by noted gun writer James Mock.

Target Shooter UK Magazine

Here’s one of the many new products featured in Target Shooter’s SHOT Show Report — a new kind of chronograph. You haven’t seen anything like it before, because it is the first Doppler Radar chronograph for general (civilian) use. Produced in Canada, the new MyLabradar chronograph can be positioned off to the side — the bullet does NOT have to be fired directly over a set of sensors. That’s a big deal — no more risk of killing your chrono when testing ammo. You just aim at the target, with the chrono placed a few yards to the left or right.

IWA Report Coming Soon from Target Shooter
The editors of Target Shooter note that new articles are added throughout the month, so visit www.TargetShooter.co.uk frequently to see new content. The big IWA trade show (the European version of SHOT Show) took place March 7-10 in Nuremberg, Germany. Target Shooter will provide a report: “Coming soon will be all the latest news from IWA — where our Editor spent four days searching around the exhibition for new and exciting products.”

Target Shooter Magazine April Issue Features IWA Show Report

April Target Shooter Magazine

If you want to see the latest and greatest shooting hardware from the other side of the Atlantic, log on to Targetshooter.co.uk, and check out the recently-released April 2013 digital edition of Target Shooter Magazine. Now offered in an easy-to-read scrolling format, the April edition is a gear-head’s delight, with dozens of large photos showing new hardware on display at the IWA Outdoor Classics trade show. You’ll find full IWA show coverage, including coverage of some very exotic rifles and components that have yet to make it across the Atlantic. Target Shooter’s “man on the scene” at the IWA show was our friend Vince Bottomley, and he came away very impressed with many of the new products he saw on display.

April Target Shooter Magazine

April Target Shooter Magazine

Vince notes that the IWA show had more than 1200 exhibitors. That’s a big presence, even compared to the 1600 exhibitors at SHOT Show. IWA also had many of the larger European exhibitors who don’t exhibit in Vegas. Interestingly, Vince noted that “aluminum stocks are becoming the ‘industry standard’ — particularly for competition and tactical rifles. Thanks to… CNC machinery, these stocks are generally reasonably priced (often less than the fiberglass equivalent) and require little or no gunsmithing[.] In most cases, they also look superb, especially when anodized or Ceracoated. Even major manufacturers are offering aluminum-stocked rifles — check out Blaser, Steyr, Haenel, Zastava and of course Unique Alpine, Accuracy International, and Desert Tactical Arms.” There were also many interesting bipods, actions, and optics on display.

April Target Shooter Magazine

In addition to the IWA report by Vince Bottomley, the April edition of Target Shooter has a field test by Chris Parkin of the Savage Model 25 Lightweight Varminter, chambered in 17 Hornet. With a comfortable thumbhole stock, Savage’s Model 25 performed well and was ultra-silent as fitted with a suppressor. The April issue also spotlights a carbon-fiber-stocked beauty — the Ataman M2 Benchrest Air Rifle. This is the second of a two-part report by Carl Boswell.

New m8002 S2 ‘Black Air’ IWA Special from Anschütz

At the IWA trade show (European SHOT Show) in Germany, Anschütz introduced a slick new black version of its model 8002 S2 air rifle. The 8002 S2 “Black Air” IWA Special air rifle features an over-molded soft black polymer coating over a base wood stock. Those who were able to handle the stock at IWA came away very impressed. Jason Goldsmith, who runs the PimpMyAirGun.com website, reports: “[The] ‘SoftTouch’ black finish [is] velvet smooth to the touch and a stunner.” Anschütz claims that its “SOFT-Grip stock combines the outstanding vibration-damping and recoil-absorbing characteristics of a naturally-grown wooden stock with the characteristics of an easy-care and weather-proof plastic stock.”

If Anschütz decides to export the Black Air IWA special model 8002 S2 to the United States, it should be available from PyramidAir.com. We expect the price to be about $2,300, but that’s a guess. Current price for a standard wood-stock m8001 is $1599.00, while a m8002 in metal stock is $2,370.

IWA 2009 (Euro SHOT Show) Successful

IWA 2009 Arms Show

The 36th Annual IWA & OutdoorClassics trade show, the European equivalent of our SHOT Show, came to a successful close yesterday, March 16th. The 3-day exhibition, largest in Europe, drew more exhibitors than ever before — 1,132 from 53 nations. The 2009 event also set a new high in the number of IWA visitors, estimated at 32,000. The largely confident mood at IWA (despite the economic crisis) was tempered by concerns over the school shooting in Winnenden.

Despite the world economic downturn, IWA exhibitors observed that sales and orders remain strong. “With an export share of 80 per cent in some cases, it was feared before the start of IWA that the economic crisis would bring the industry a drop in sales in 2009 after a number of good years. But this has not been confirmed [yet]; the exhibitors are very satisfied with the course of the exhibition,” says Olaf Sauer, President of the Verband der Hersteller von Jagd-, Sportwaffen und Munition (JSM). Klaus Gotzen, General Manager of JSM, adds: “The strength of the industry lies in the high quality and innovativeness of its products. The great response from the visitors and the record number of exhibitors show that the industry is closing ranks to face the global challenge”.

For more information about the IWA arms show, visit the IWA Web Site, or download this official Survey of IWA Exhibitors and Visitors from the 2008 exhibition. The Video below shows many of the exhibits at the 2009 IWA show. (Note: there is a soundtrack so turn down your speakers if you’re at work.)
