Debutante Hunters Movie Wins Sundance Festival Award
Hunters and the Sundance Film Festival are two things you normally don’t hear in the same sentence. On Sunday that changed when a short documentary film about a group of female hunters from South Carolina won the prestigious film festival’s Shorts Audience Award, and earned director Maria White a $5,000 prize. The 13-minute film, “The Debutante Hunters”, directed by Maria White, was the audience favorite among 700 short films submitted to the Festival. The film tells the story of women and why they hunt. Director White had the idea for the movie after going on a hunt: “This was a world I wanted to explore, where a woman can be feminine, a mother, a daughter, and still be a total bad-ass.”
The short film, set up for internet streaming by Yahoo.com, has been viewed over half a million times, garnering 50,000+ votes from movie fans. Director White revealed that she hopes to develop the short film into a TV or cable series, using the additional eleven hours of footage she has compiled.

Sheesh!
This is a great film that will go a long way towards explaining hunting to those who need it most, viz, the kind of liberals that attend these fancy art events.
And the audience chose the award.
Okay, the girls are a little prettier than the rest of us mortals, but who cares?
Works even better.
My hat’s off to the film maker.

Very well done, it’s refreshing to see more women enjoying what for so long has been a ” mans Thing “. The only down side i saw was the baiting corn by the deer blind. Yes i am old fashion and was taught to never bait an animal unless you need it to survive.
What? You’re a “Total bad ass” because you hunt?
Gimmeabreak….
/and I’m with crowhop, baitin’ is cheatin’ (and illegal where I was raised)
Thought this piece was great. A few years ago I was asked to volunteer as an instructor for the BOW (Become and Outdoors Woman). It was one of the most fun and rewarding things I have ever done. Both years I volunteered the ladies gave there full attention to learning about the outdoors and what it offers. I wish more ladies would take to the woods and waters. Hunting, fishing, shooting, camping, and all other outdoor activities should be shared by all genders.

Yawn. 13 minutes I’ll never get back…
I’m with Nate. I also do BOW classes and women just love to learn the outdoor sports.
