Larry Vickers Shoots Long-Range with AI AX .338 LM
In this video Larry Vickers tries his hand at long-range shooting, with assistance from Gunsite Instructor Walt Wilkinson, a .50-Cal Champion. Larry shoots an Accuracy International AX chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, while Wilkinson pilots a .50 BMG Steyr HS-50 rig. Wilkinson mentors Vickers, covering the basics of long-range shooting from bipod. Over the course of the shooting session, Wilkinson debunks some common misconceptions while Larry attempts shots out to 1470 yards.
This video is fun to watch, but understand that this is intended more for tactical shooters who will be satisfied with one-MOA accuracy. Wilkinson says that, with the kind of tactical rifles being used, and factory ammo, achieving one-MOA groups at long range is a realistic goal: “A one-MOA gun… that’s what you’re looking for. In most cases, with the … environmental changes, the ammunition, and the rifle put together, a one MOA group is really what you should expect [at best].”

I don’t understand … why would you handicap a large cartridge like the .338 Lapua Mag. by shooting it from a 20 inch barrel. By choosing such a short barrel (for this calibre) aren’t you just punishing yourself with recoil without getting any of the benefits?
I can understand the shorter barrel in some kind of “tactical” situation, but again, in this video the stated purpose is long range accuracy – so why not go with a calibre appropriate barrel length at the very least?
The whole video seems pointless other than showing that the 338 in a 20″ barrel can not be accurately shot beyond a certain distance in similar conditions. If the gun site instructor had taken over from the 1000 yrds mark and beyond with his 50 cal and showed his good marksmanship that would have been entertaining.
Instead we have an amateur pretending he is friend with a pro, trying to show off with a flash rig, walking off shots to a distant target( which is not real feat) with disappointed results at the end…
