Redding Adds 358/25 WSSM Dies for Indiana Hunters
Redding Reloading Equipment has responded to the requirements of Indiana Deer Hunters with the addition of the 358/25 WSSM to their line of regular production “Custom Series” reloading dies. The following 358/25 WSSM dies are available: full-length sizing die, neck-sizing die, and a 3-die deluxe set including both full-length and neck-sizing dies plus a seating die with crimp.
This 358/25 WSSM wildcat cartridge has gained favor as an alternative to standard handgun calibers under Indiana’s hunting regulations, which allow the use of cartridges with a bullet diameter of .357″ or larger and a maximum case length of 1.625” during Indiana’s firearms deer season. The 358/25 WSSM can be used in both bolt action and modern sporting rifle styles. The round produces effective terminal ballistics on whitetail deer.

I don’t get it – is this cartridge being used for deer during a handgun-only season, or is it being used in lieu of handgun-caliber carbines during a regular season? Does Indiana actually prohibit the use of rifle calibers for deer hunting???
Check out ‘Deer Hunting Equipment’ in the regs. http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/2343.htm
Short answer seems to be ‘yes’.
This cartrige is being used in rifles not pistols. And Indiana does not designate Rifle or Pistol Cartriges rather it implements any caliber chambered in a rifle platform must have a case length between 1.125 and 1.625 and fifr a bullet dia. larger than .357. While pistols platforms must fire a bullet larger than .243 and be fired out of a casing longer than (I believe)1.125 with no case maximum.
So yes you can hunt with a Rifle in Indiana but it will be a Wildcat cartrige like the 358/25wssm or not a rifle but a pistol chambered in a rifle cartrige.
I live in Indiana, hunt whitetail, and have one thing to say about this… Oh what tangled webs our well intentioned state representatives weave when they write law based on emotion and feelings, rather than common since and empirical data.
And what is really goofy is you can legally hunt with a “handgun” that shoots .308 Win out of a 24″ long barrel as long as it doesn’t have a butt-stock and the receiver is registered as a handgun…
I’ll get off my soap box now. Thank you.
You’ve heard of the law of unintended consequences; these are the unintended consequences of Law.
