Lapua Offers FREE Ballistics App for Java-Compatible Phones
Lapua now offers a FREE ballistics program for modern smart phones that run Java Apps. (Unfortunately, that excludes Apple iPhones and Android OS phones, but Lapua says that the majority of smartphones run Java). The program calculates drift and drop, and it corrects for altitude, temp, air pressure, and shot angle. The Lapua Ballistics App also includes a database of Lapua bullet profiles with ultra-reliable radar-derived Ballistic Coefficients. Sound good? Now go get your smart phone. The program must be downloaded with a mobile phone. Open a web browser in your smart-phone and navigate to www.lapua.com/ballistics and choose the correct version for your phone.
Lapua’s exterior ballistic software for mobile phones is capable of predicting trajectories in real time with extreme accuracy. Using Lapua Ballistics, there is no need for checking tables and calculating cosines for inclination compensation (you still have to input the angle). The program also compensates for the effect of cartridge temperature on muzzle velocity and the effect of atmospheric conditions on the projectile’s trajectory.
Lapua Ballistics is based on precise Doppler Radar measurements of actual bullet drag — professional data available only for Lapua bullets. Lapua Ballistics can be installed on all smartphones supporting basic Java (Java MIDP 2.0). NOTE: Apple iPhone and Android platforms do not support Java ME.

That release makes no sense at all.
What is Android? Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language.

If it’s not Iphone or Android then it’s blackberry only for the most part.

EDITOR: There’s more to it than you think. The Ballistics App requires Jave J2ME which is NOT currently compatible with the Android SDK, which does NOT run J2ME natively.
Please read the details below. While Android development IS done with Java tools, an Android device doesn’t run as a Java Device per se. All we can do is repeat what Lapua says: “Lapua Ballistics can be installed to all mobile phones supporting basic Java (Java MIDP 2.0 support needed). Apple iPhone and Android platforms do not support Java ME.”
Java J2ME is NOT the same as the java code on which Android OS is based. There are some micro-emulators, but at this time, they is not widely deployed and we can’t vouch for their performance
Android is NOT Java–
Oracle’s Larry Ellison has explained that the Android OS is NOT Java: “Here again, some confusion could come from Larry’s keynote address. Some might believe that Android is Java-based and that it runs Java. However, Android is NOT Java-based; it is Linux-based. Google Android SDK converts Java bytecode to Android more optimized Dalvik VM bytecode. Thus the developer codes with Java, but the device does not run Java (kind of similar development experience to GWT, which cross-compiles Java code to JavaScript/AJAX). While it is possible to have Java VM for an Android phone, an application built with Android SDK does not run on Java when executing on the device.
Lapua App is NOT just for Blackberry
The App is definitely NOT limited to Blackberry. I have personally used the App running on a LG smartphone, an Ericsson smartphone, a Nokia smartphone, and a Blackberry. As to the compatibility to your particular phone, so long as its not an iPhone, Google phone, or Android phone, there is a good chance it might work.
Here is one converter that supposedly allows an Android smartphone to run J2ME Java natively: http://www.getjar.com/mobile/26312/j2me—java-runner-for-android-os-all/
Aside from all that, my $.02 is that the defacto smartphone market is iPhone and Android. And I say that as a Windows Phone 7 developer.
Editor: Jon, I said as much to the Lapua folks at SHOT Show. But I was told that this App should run on more smartphones than iPhone and Android combined. Just repeating what I was told…
I cant get this to load into my cell phone.
I have an Samsung Solstice II a817 and it says it has Java MIDP 2.0 .
What am I doing wrong?
