Ruger No. 1 Barreled Actions on Sale
A slim, compact, falling block rifle belongs in every rifle enthusiast’s collection. Falling blocks, such as the Ruger No.1, look spectacular when fitted with premium highly-figured wood “furniture”. Check out this No. 1 with a gorgeous piece of Turkish Walnut crafted by stockmaker Paul Dressels.
If you have been thinking about a falling block project, all you need is a nice stock blank and a barreled action. As for the latter, now’s the time to buy. Brownells currently has Ruger No. 1 barreled actions on sale for $527.57, marked down from $775.83. Barreled actions are available in four different calibers: .220 Swift, 22-250, .223 Remington, and .416 Rigby. Barrel lengths on the sale units are either 22″ or 24″. Of course you can always pull the barrel and substitute a custom match-grade barrel. The sale actions have a blued finish. FFL Required for Purchase.
The Ruger No. 1 is a single shot rifle, with Farquharson-style internal hammer falling block action. It was introduced in 1966. An underlever lowers the block allowing loading and cocks the rifle. Ruger No. 1 actions are rugged. Lenard Brownell once said: “There was never any question about the strength of the [No. 1] action….I never did manage to blow one apart.”

How about a definitive article in 2008 as to how to make them shoot as we (6mmBR “disciples of the grooved bore”) and no doubt the forefathers of benchrest – such Donaldson, Landis and Ness would have demanded – to name but three?
The actions are, as you rightly observe, an elegant fowling piece but their triggers, two name the most easily cured malady, and more controversially inherent bedding problems, remain a ‘challenge’ even when married with a heavy barrel which dispenses with the rib-mounted scope issue.
Having said all this I’ve nonetheless managed to shoot no less than 18 Roe deer in just 4 days of late autumn deer culling in the Scottish Highlands and without missing a single beast! So perhaps things aren’t all that bad if you place the action in the correct context of intended use? (For the record the rifle was/is a No. 1 HV in 220 Swift, which is a legal calibre in Scotland on deer of this size.
Merry Crimble and a Happy New Year to you all whatever your preferred bore diameter!

I’d love to see an article on rebarreling and accurizing the No. 1 rifle. I have the perfect candidate a No.1-S in 45-70 Govt, that I haven’t shot in over eight years. Maybe turn her into a 6mmBR?
I am interested in the Ruger No. 1 barreled action in 22-250. Do you still have one available.

I am looking for a falling block action only.Want to build a 404 jeffery on a falling block action. Can anybody help please
I am building a 338 RUM, #1. Would like a Pro Hunter flex stock on it. This is my first rifle build.
My next dream is a Number 1 in 500Nitro Express.
I have the ‘smith in mind (he’s a #1 specialist), but as usual funds (or the lack of them) is the issue.
Oh, I already have two others, a 17Rem, and a 300WSM…
I would really like to build a number one based rifle in 7mm-08. I will willingly replace the barrel of one of your barelled actions. Since this is the case will any of the actions on sale work for this purpose?
Thanks and if the answer is that one of the actions will work with a 7mm-08 barrel, I will buy tomorrow.
Thanks so much
John Gabby
It the stainless No.1 action strength equal to the chrome molly No.1 action? In general, the material properties are not the same.
I have had a No.1 in .458 Win Mag since 1968 and I love it. I would like to have another No.1 in .458 Lott. Any .458 Win Mag available for rechambering? What about a .458 in stainless?
Thanks,

I would really like to build a Number One action based rifle in 7mm-08. Do you have actions without barrels or can you provide a 7mm-08 barrled action?
Thanks

I have a No1 in .338 WM. It is tack driver and has accounted for many whitetails, but have yet to go west after Elk. I love it!!!
Ruger No 1, truly a work of art. I’d like one that shoots 1/4″ or better at 100 yards. Can it be done? If so, I’d spend the money and then dress it up purdy with pretty wood and some engraving. Please list any gunsmith’s that have done it and KNOW Ruger No 1’s inside and out.
Thanks,
Ed
want a barrled action in 416 rigby in stainless steel-same as factory to put black stocks on-apperciate reply with price
For Edward Boycott… Did you ever find a rifle that will shoot 1/4″ at 100 yards?!? That’s basically a one-holer rifle (!) right up there with the search for the Holy Grail. I would like to hear about it (the rifle – if you found such)and what the reload was that caused such accuracy to be attained.

Good to see intrest in My ole #1 shooter. Thanks to this discussion I’ll be getting barreled action for my worn-out #1V in 22-250. I’ve owned 6 of these # 1’s rifles & still have 5. I’ve hunted deer, elk, turkey from Texas to Colorado western Sloan. Yes we shoot turkeys with deer rifles if your very careful and using a one-shooter improves shot placement and kills with fewer shots. #1 ejectors and spare bulled in hand makes for fast second shot. Thanks for simple fix to my 22-250
