Haul Rifles and Range Gear with Low-Cost Welding Cart

Welding Cart Range Cart

The 2022 Berger Southwest Nationals kicks off later this week at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, AZ. The match runs February 9-13, 2022*, starting with the mid-range competition for F-Class and High Power (sling) rifles, followed by long-range matches. Here’s an inexpensive cart that can help haul gear for major matches where you’re moving from one firing berm to another over the course of a day.

Creedmoor Sports Range Cart CRC-1High Power and F-Class shooters have a ton of gear they need to carry out to the firing lines. (These photos were taken at the Berger SWN). To do the hauling, you can certainly purchase a factory-made, purpose-built cart that folds up and has all the bells and whistles. The Creedmoor Sports CRC-1 (photo right) is a proven, quality product that works great. You’ll find these used by top shooters at Camp Perry. But the Creedmoor CRC-1 cart costs $499.95.

For a fraction of that price ($69.99), plus a few dollars more for do-it-yourself enhancements, you can have a heavy-duty cart that will haul all your gear just fine, though it doesn’t fold up. In the top photo is a Harbor Freight Welding Cart we saw at the Berger Southwest Nationals. This rig is carrying a rifle in hard gun case, bipod, folding chair, shooting mat, tripod, spotting scope, rear sand-bag, and ammo box — that’s a lot of gear!

Welding Cart Range CartWelding Cart Range Cart

Check out the Harbor Freight Welding Cart, item #65939. This cart is available now for just $69.99. Overall size is 29-1/2″ L x 20″ W x 49″ H, and width between side rails is 18″. The wheels (with tires) are 20 3/4″ in diameter for smooth rolling. Consider that, if you made your own cart from scratch you could easily pay $30.00 or more just for the large-diameter wheels and axle. Do note — this cart has air-filled tires. Be sure to inflate before you go to the Range!

As sold, the Harbor Freight Welding Cart can benefit from upgrades for range use. But with a few bungee cords (and some creativity), the cart can be adapted pretty easily to hauling your gun gear. If you want to enhance the basic cart, it’s easy to add plastic side-panels on the bottom unit, and fit a barrel-holding system on the cross-tube. This ensures rifles and gear won’t flop forward. (A small piece of wood under the bottom panel provides a bit of extra lift that will keep the bottom plate out of the dirt and gravel.)

* The Berger SW Nationals normally concludes on a Sunday, but the official schedule includes Monday, February 14 in case there is a lost day due to weather.

MidwayUSA Grants for Coach Training and Range Development

Youth Shooting Programs Coaching range improvement

Does your range or shooting club need money to improve facilities? Would you like to train club members as shooting coaches? Well the MidwayUSA Foundation is offering money to help. Here’s how it works…

MidwayUSA Foundation will offer $1 million available for coach training and range development. The Coach Training Grant Program will accept applications through March 1, and Range Development applicants have until April 1 to apply. For both programs, applicants must apply through MidwayUSA Foundation’s online grant application process.

MidwayUSA Foundations range development grants

Range Development Grants help existing shooting ranges to make improvements/expansions to allow for more youth-oriented shooting activities. This grant cycle runs February 1 to April 1 and cash grants will be awarded in June. Range Development grants will not exceed $75,000 or 50% of the proposed project budget. Requesting facilities must be a range utilized by a MidwayUSA Foundation endowment holder. Additional requirements can be found on the MidwayUSA Foundation website.

MidwayUSA Foundations range development grants

The MidwayUSA Foundation’s Coach Training Grant Program will be open February 1 through March 1 and grants will be awarded in May. The maximum grant payout is $5,000 and the funds will be paid in May. Teams or individuals interested in the Coach Training grant program should reach out to eligible organizations at their state, regional, or national level. These organizations must hold an Agency or Donor Designated endowment with MidwayUSA Foundation. CLICK HERE for other requirements.

How these Grant Programs Help the Shooting Sports
Without proper ranges, there could be no shooting sports at all. And qualified coaches are essential for youth marksmanship training. Executive Director, G. Scott Reynolds explains: “These programs help put the infrastructure in place to provide qualified coaches and regulation ranges. We want all kids that desire to participate in youth shooting sports to have that opportunity.”

The MidwayUSA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity working to sustain and grow the shooting sports industry by providing long-term funding to youth shooting teams. Every donation made is tax-deductible. The Foundation supports all shooting disciplines. For more INFO, visit Midwayusafoundation.org.
