 The complete, official Results Bulletin from the 2011 NRA National Junior Air Gun Championship in Port Clinton, Ohio can now be found on the NRA’s Competitive Shooting website.
Congratulations to all of the 2011 winners and thanks to everyone who made the trip to Camp Perry for the competition this year. We would also like to extend our thanks to the staff, volunteers, and our friends with the Civilian Marksmanship Program and Ohio National Guard for their hard work that made this year such a big success.
2012 Championship Moves to Alabama

‘Tis the season for Air Rifles at Camp Perry. The NRA National Junior Air Gun Championship at Camp Perry just concluded yesterday, June 25th, 2011. Photos from the event are displayed in the slide show below (courtesy the NRA Blog).
 National Junior Olympic 3-Position Air Rifle Championships
Today, June 26th, the National Junior Olympic 3-Position Air Rifle (3PAR) Championships commences. The event will run for six days, finishing July 1st. The Junior Olympic Tournament will be held at the CMP Marksmanship Center (North) at Camp Perry. The CMP will provide special LIVE coverage for the 3PAR Junior Olympic event. Live target images and results will be available on the CMP website at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/report_matchResult.cgi?matchID=7132.

 Each year, skilled shooters from many countries come to Camp Perry, Ohio to compete in Pistol, Smallbore Rifle, and High Power Rifle disciplines at the NRA National Matches.
With the National Rifle & Pistol Championships kicking off in month, there’s no better time to check out the 2011 NRA National Matches Program. This official guide to the NRA National Matches is available for FREE online in a digital magazine format. The National Matches Program includes a full schedule of events, an explanation of rules and courses of fire for all disciplines, a sponsor list, and other important information for Camp Perry competitors.

Other free Camp Perry resources are available online. The 2011 National Matches Ad & Information Guide provides readers with information on local business, restaurants, lodging, and more.  In the Daily Bulletin, we recently covered the NRA Junior Pistol and Smallbore Rifle Camps being held at Camp Perry this summer. But what about training opportunities for adults? As it turns out, the NRA offers a variety of instructional sessions at Camp Perry this summer.
First, the NRA Training Dept. offers a Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course. This is for those looking to learn how to run a firing line or simply learn more about proper range operations. Two RSO courses will be held, the first on July 18th and the second on July 29th. The NRA also offers coaching courses. If you’re interested in helping others hone their shooting skills, you can sign up for one of the NRA’s Coach Schools. The Coach Education Program is offering a Level 1 Pistol Coach School on July 13-15. This will be followed by a Level 3 Air Rifle/Smallbore Coaching Clinic from July 25-27. To register for these coaching classes, or learn more about the lesson plan, contact NRA National Coach Trainer Marcus Raab at mraab@nrahq.org.
In addition to the Camp Perry programs, there are adult training courses and coach schools conducted across the country. Check www.nrainstructors.org for training opportunities in your area or the Coach School listing to find the right coaching course for you.

If you or someone you know is a young shooter looking to mix some top-notch coaching with summer fun, then look no further than the NRA Junior Shooting Camps. Each summer, the NRA offers a Junior Pistol Camp and a Junior Smallbore Rifle Camp at Camp Perry in Northern Ohio. The slideshow below shows the 2010 Junior Smallbore Rifle Camp.
Both Pistol and Rifle programs are conducted as five-day camps offering expert instruction by NRA Certified Coaches. Both camps are geared towards intermediate shooters, but beginners are accepted on a space-available basis. Open to youths 12-18 years of age, these camps provide young people with the chance to improve their shooting skills under the guidance and supervision of experienced coaches.
The Junior Pistol Camp will be held July 12-16 and the Junior Smallbore Rifle Camp will be held July 23-27, both in conjunction with the National Matches at Camp Perry. The Junior Pistol Camp is limited to 50 shooters and will focus on conventional and international pistol shooting, while the Junior Smallbore Rifle Camp is limited to 72 shooters and centers on 3 and 4-position rifle shooting.
Advanced registration (by June 15) is just $200.00, standard registration (after June 15) is $225.00. This includes training materials and administrative fees, but does not cover travel or lodging costs. First-time campers for the Junior Pistol Camp only are eligible for tuition and travel reimbursement of up to $500.00 per individual thanks to the generous support of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association.

 If you’re heading to Camp Perry this summer, the NRA has a new downloadable resource that should come in handy. The 2011 National Matches Information Guide (digital edition) includes all the essential information for the National Matches such as a map of Camp Perry, championship calendar, and schedules for important events. The guidebook also includes ads from local businesses in Port Clinton, Ohio with information on restaurants, lodging, and more. There are special promotions and discounts for Camp Perry competitors.

SGT Sherri Gallagher of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit had a spectacularly successful 2010. First she won the National High Power Championship convincingly, setting records in the process. Then young Sherri earned the title of “Soldier of the Year”. Sherri is the first women ever to be honored as the U.S. Army’s Soldier of the Year.
When we learned Sherri was staffing the USAMU booth at SHOT Show, we headed straight there with the hopes of chatting with America’s premier lady rifle shooter. Our correspondent Kelly Bachand was eager to talk to Sherri, as they are friends who once shot together on the U.S. National Junior team. You should really take the time to watch this video. Sherri is very open and candid about her shooting accomplishments, and she offers advice that will help any shooter.

While visiting the Forster Products booth at SHOT Show yesterday, we had a chance to chat with three-time National High Power Long Range Champion John Whidden. John was his amiable self as usual, sharing his match-winning experience with Kelly Bachand, a young .308 Palma shooter. John and Kelly are squadded together on the U.S. National Team that will be going to Australia for the World Full-bore Championship later this year.
John shared his thoughts on shooting the .243 Win in competition and he also discussed the advantages of a V-Block system in a prone rifle. With a good V-Block you can use the same stock with different barreled action. You can even change between centerfire and rimfire in the same gun. John uses V-Blocks in his own rifles, and Whidden Gunworks makes V-Blocks for Remington, Rem Clone, and Savage Actions.

 Here is great news for high-power shooters, tactical competitors, and hunters. Lapua will be producing .260 Remington brass starting in 2011. The official announcement will be made at SHOT Show 2011 in Las Vegas, and brass should start arriving in early spring. With Lapua’s introduction of .260 Rem brass, precision shooters now have a “no-brainer” first choice for cartridge brass in this popular chambering. No longer will you have to sort and cull (and re-sort) Rem-brand .260 brass. And you won’t have to fool around necking-up .243 brass or necking down .308 brass, with the problems that come with case-reforming operations.
The .260 Rem offers ballistics similar to the 6.5×55 with a cartridge size that fits short actions. For long range, the .260 Rem works great with 120gr to 142gr bullets, making it highly suitable for both hunting and target shooting. Here is what Lapua says about its new brass:

With such a solid history already established in such a short time, Lapua is proud to add the .260 to our line of premier components for the handloader.
[Editor’s Comment: I shot the .260 Rem extensively for 3 years, testing many powder/bullet/primer combinations. I tried both Remington-brand brass (very inconsistent), and necked-up Lapua and Norma .243 brass. If you want a reliable, accurate “go-to” load for the new Lapua .260 brass, I recommend Lapua 123gr Scenars with Hodgdon H4350 powder, running at about 2950 fps. Both Fed 210M and CCI large rifle primers work well. If you run the ballistics, you’ll find you give up little or nothing shooting the 123s vs. the 140gr class bullets because you can achieve significantly higher velocities with the lighter bullets, when using most powders. If you simply MUST shoot the 140s, try Reloder 17 to get higher velocities.]
